Wow...stay away from WSU after dark...dang!

Woohoo! I'm considering moving to 21'st/Tyler area (apartment-ville...)

Besides, I've heard the gangs here are wannabe's. (But that's completely a subjective opinion.) Try Denver, or even worse, Dallas.

Wichita does not compare at all to Detroit. I will never forget my first trip to Detroit a few years ago and seeing all of the abandoned and dilapidated buildings. I had never seen the likes of it.
I grew up in Wichita and used to walk and ride my bike all over the place. I still go back at least once a year to visit family and friends. It seems to me that Wichita has declined some over the years since I moved away, but only in certain areas. Other areas, such as Old Cowtown, have improved and revitalized the city.

It's still nothing like Little Rock. When I first got stationed there back in '91 a friend and I were driving around town, and got lost. We were at a stoplight at Asher/University, and one guy crossing the street pulled a ar14/m16. My friend ducked down, and stepped on the gas and just blew the light.

Wichita has a few places you don't want to drive in too. Especially at night.

I've lived in several large cities and Wichita is pretty mixed up as far as being able to distinguish the bad neighborhoods from the better ones. In most large cities (even small ones) there is a sort of invisible boundary line, separating the seedy neighborhoods from the safer ones, but in Wichita, it is speckled throughout, especially in the Southeast side. I'm always hearing advertisements for property, "in Wichita's prestigious, sought-after east side". WHATEVER. I live on the S.E. side and it's a DUMP. In my opinion, which might not hold water, Wichita has a LOT of crime, whether violent or property, and I don't feel safe anywhere in this town. People here are brazen and will attempt to steal cars in broad daylight, and if you witness it, you either keep your mouth shut or risk getting hurt by attempting to thwart it. I know it could be a lot worse, but for someone who isn't accustomed to such balls, it's pretty unnerving.

There ARE a lot of friendly, helpful people - friendlier than from where I came, but no one was ever harmed by unfriendliness; it doesn't cancel out the fear I feel living here. As soon as my temporary work stint is done here, I'm outta here!!!

Can a single college grad female live at Westlink Apts. safely? It's near you, I think, and I'm considering renting there with my new job. Thanks.

In terms of safety, you would be fine there. The west side generally just feels a lot more safe than other areas of the city. Some other apartments to take a look at are Marina Point at 21st & Amidon, Newport Apartments at Central & Ridge, Crown Chase Apartments at Central & Ridge, Cimarron Apartments at Central & Ridge, and so on. Westlink Village is probably the best option as most reviews speak well of the complex. Crime rates get higher the more towards 21st and Arkansas you go, and the more east you go towards the downtown area, same thing. Basically, if you live west of I-235, you should be considerably safer, if that means anything. Hope this helps!

I agree about Planeview being one of the worst. You might consider the area around WSU as well. It's terrible up there. As regards Hilltop, there is an incorporated part to Hilltop and it's ok. Nice apartments, mature trees, well kept grounds and such. The area west of Pershing between Lincoln and Harry is the part to avoid.

People who say that there is nothing to do in Wichita are people who haven't turned off their TVs long enough to go outside to see what's out there. They're the kind of people who think violent criminals are roaming the streets to shoot them down if they leave their houses. Simply ridiculous.
I agree. Like mmarlett says, ICT has about half the crime rates that CLE has. I never had any difficulties when I lived in CLE. I used to work in the city of East Cleveland, which has crime rates so high that getting crime stats from them is difficult (I reckon they're embarrassed---their info on city-data.com sorta coincides with their lack of participation in regional crime surveys). Still, I never had any problems there.

I'm not saying that crime stats aren't useful information... I'm just saying a rating of 400-500 on the scale doesn't mean that ICT is a criminal wasteland.
