Wichita crime map... ghetto locations
Howdy. The wife and I moved to Wichita back in December. Like LOTS of people who ask the same questions on this board, we wondered which neighborhoods were to be avoided. I found this map on the City of Wichita website, here:
City of Wichita - Crime Statistics Crime Stats Main
And we used it as a guide on where and where not to look for a rental house. I imagine lots of people considering the same move will find this useful. After 8 months in this town, I know my way around fairly well- and this map pretty much lays out which areas are safe and which areas are questionable.

There are other similar maps available at the link posted above- for specific crimes like burglary, auto theft, shoplifting, etc. We moved to a neighborhood that borders the (9.569-19.137) range and the (19.137-28.706) range. Haven't encountered a single problem or suspicious character in the neighborhood since we've been here.

The area at 13th and Hillside kind of surprised me, is that related to the businesses in that area?

Wichita is no place to live, any one who knows wichita will tell you that they will not live in wichita, even good areas have breakins. Andover goddard or durby is your best bet to live near wichita.
If you do get a good deal on a home in wichita you will likely not be alble to sell fast.
Wichita is a place people go to work, no one in their right mind goes there for retirement or vacation. Much like detroit.

13th and Hillside
That area is one of the worst gang areas. All the area around the university has gotten horrible. Hilltop and planeview areas of town are the 2 worst.

This is not true..alot of people have a desire to live in the Wichita City limits. College Hill is still a very nice neighborhood so long as you are to the east of the Central-Hillside intersection. Also smack in the middle of the city Old Town/Downtown has a very high demand for condo/lofts. However the only reason nobody wants to live in Wichita that I could see would be good old USD 259, I would never send my kids to Wichita Public schools...they would have to be homeschooled or go to a private school. That is why the city limits are still a wonderful place to live around the 119th-Kellogg and 21st Maize area. They are so popular so that parents can send their kids to Goddard or Maize public schools.
Also to correct your previous remark the City is Derby.

Everybody who has ever lived in Wichita knows what areas to avoid. There are basically 3- the NE side from Central north to about 29th between the canal and Hillside and the area known as Planeview. Other areas like Oaklawn are questionable but not as unsafe as those 2 are. If you have to drive through those areas, you keep your doors locked and your gun (with a CCW permit of course) within easy reach.

I guess it's changed a lot since we lived there (1979-80). I was never afraid to go into any neighborhood but maybe I should have been. At that time, BTK was running loose and the wife wanted to keep a loaded gun under the mattress.
Do you know how lumpy an 870 Remington can be?
