Hi everyone,

I am a recent graduate who has lived in upstate NY all my life (Syracuse/Rochester). I have recently accepted a position as Washburn University as an Admissions Couselor, and will be moving to Kansas in the next few weeks. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for someone like me coming out there.

I am considering living in Lawrence, because my girlfriend will be joining me shortly, and she didn't want to be right in Topeka. I also know that my job will require me to be away from home alot, so I want her to feel safe. From doing some research, I believe that the drive from Lawrence to Topeka shouldn't be too bad either?

We just graduated from SUNY Brockport, and the idea of a college town like Lawrence seems appealing. We are both pretty liberal, and like the idea of being in a college town. We're actually looking into living at the Greens at Alvamar right now, so that we're not just with all college kids though.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Don't live in Topeka. I went to grad school at Washburn and loved it, but I lived in Lawrence.

Lawrence is a wonderful area and I love it a lot. I've been here ten years now, so for me, it's getting to be time to move on. My biggest problem with Lawrence is that the local economy is terrible. To make ANY money you need to get a job in Topeka or Kansas City. And considering the areas around us, the housing and cost of living is expensive.

Oh, and I have commuted from Lawrence to Topeka and the commute is easy. Especially if you live on the West side of town (the newer, nicer part). About 30 minutes one way and an easy drive.

Under normal conditions, you can drive from Lawrence to Topeka in less than 30 minutes. That portion of I-70 is a toll road, so you will pay a toll each way if you choose the fast route.

I think you would love Lawrence, and you've obviously done your research. I went to KU and spent every summer there growing up, as most of my relatives live there. It's the most beautiful part of the state, IMO, and has an awesome music scene. It's also a very liberal city. Definitely has that total college town feel. I had friends that went to Washburn and loved it, but Topeka just doesn't have the small town, cozy feel that Lawrence does.

I think Alvamar would be a good fit for you also, and, no, the commute to Topeka is not bad at all. Plus, you have Kansas City just as close, and if you want that big city feel every now and then (not to mention more great music and the best BBQ in the country), you have that option.

I live in Wichita, but only because this is where my parents are. My husband and I wish we would have stayed and raised our kids there. It's just not quite like any other town I've ever been to. Someone else commented that the cost of living is higher, and that's very true, but I think it's worth it for the wonderful experience.

Good luck!

You might also look at Wabaunsee County. Its mostly rural or near the suburbs in Topeka. There are plenty of people who work in Topeka and make the short drive from Wabaunsee County. Lawrence is a bed room Community for Topeka and Kansas City so rent is high for any place decent. You might like the Flint Hills scenery and get to have a yard with a little privacy out side of town.

Used to live in Lawrence and work in Topeka. Lawrence is a very nice place to live, tons of things to do and closer to Kansas City, so better shopping and entertainment is ~45 mins away. Commute to Topeka is very easy...20-30 mins depending on where you live.

If you want a more historical, walkable place, you should consider downtown. If you like a more "suburban" neighborhood, then my recommendation is to live in the west side (around Walkarusa avenue).

Topeka has some nice areas, particularly the Southwest side, but I think you'd fit in Lawrence better...
