In Topeka you can get anyway within 15 mins and no traffic except for the weekends when out of towner come to shop.
I was looking for a house in SW area and they are going for $400,000+ but the property tax was high, much higher than NJ, which was a shock to me but you get a great quality home with all the amenities. I also looked into Lawrence and liked it a lot more since it's more modern than Topeka and nicer restaurants. We decided not to relocate to KS b/c economically, it didn't make sense but I did meet really nice people there. Good luck!

Man you would think Topeka is like Iraq. I used to hate it, but then as I grew up I appreciated it a lot more. We live in SE Shawnee Co and its an easy drive to SW Topeka or Lawrence. We bought our house for 155k in 2005 and similar houses I looked at in Lawrence were well over 200. Lawrence is a great college town and I lived there 5 years, but it really thinks too much of itself and they have tried to ban just about everything. As for the person who suggested Johnson County, I commuted from Topeka to KC for a year and it is not enjoyable being in the car 2 hours a day when you don't have to be. Compared to California, Johnson County is resonable. But when we were looking at houses there, they were at least 1/3 higher than Topeka. The SE part of Topeka is experiencing a lot of growth with housing and retail. People from Lawrence in particular are moving because of the housing factor.

I hope that you don’t take everything on here so literal. Everyone has an opinion including my own, so here it is. You will get what you want out of Topeka. If you look for crime you will find it, if you look for culture and diversity you will find that to. I would be more concerned with why the zip code prefix is 666, and I've been told that the word topeka is equivalent to hell. As far as the commute, there is no city in America that doesn’t have a commute to somewhere or something. Now I will agree that you get more bang for your buck housing wise. Just do your research, and you will be fine. Negative is negative and positive is positive.
Good luck

Do Your Home work before moving to Topeka
Hello, I have to tell you, I have lived in Topeka most of my life. Went to Topeka schools etc. I married and now have 3
children who now have children of their own. We owned a good business here in Topeka back in the mid 90's and where doing very well. Our 3 kids where 15,13 and 11. we also lived just outside of Topeka near Silver Lake. Believe me things were not all good here in Topeka even back then, My wife and I decided to sell the business, sell our home, pack up the kids and get out of dodge, and so we did. For the first 2 months our kids were not happy with my wife and I to say the least about moving out of state. We moved to Branson Mo. My wife's mother took ill so we moved closer to Topeka. We in no way wanted to move back to Topeka because it was still the same when we left and was in no gotten any better. Unfortunately my wife's mothers health got worse then we did end up moving back to Topeka to help take care of her, Let me some it up by saying our 3 kids where not at all happy about moving back to Topeka. The very first day we moved back the was a gang related shooting at the intersection of 29th and gage Blvd, A couple days later there was a similar situation at another busy intersection..There is not a day goes by that there isn't something on the local TV news or in the local news paper about some shootings, stabbing or someone being robbed going on. Our 3 kids have gotten older now have children of thier own now and have gotten a little wiser, because now they to even dislike it here now they to, do not want to raise their children here. If we could get the wife's mother to
relocate, we would do so in a heart beat. we do know that there is no such thing a perfect place to live, every place has it problems, but you have to call an ace & ace and a duce a duce. Best of luck and best wishes to you and yours.

zip codes
Working at the Goodyear plant, 66619 is a good zip code. In fact just about any zip code in the Seaman School District will be good. There is a beautiful county park in 66619. Good Luck.

I have to agree with everyone else. I lived in Topeka for almost 2yrs and it is not a good place to be. I lived way out on the southeast side and never had any problems, but I did get rid of my fire red camaro because I could not drive down the street without getting "I want to steal your car" looks. North Topeka is horrible. The southwest side is definately best if you do go there. The only good thing is that you are about an hour away from Kansas City, Lawrence is ok too. You will not be missing anything if you do move there!
Best of luck!!
