There is only areas of one stage or another of urban disintigration, This is what you get when you try to use a 2k year old book that never had any good advice to run your life.
There are plenty of towns and cities just as you describe well outside of the bible belt. (Detroit? Flint MI?)

I find it hilarious that you solely blame the bible types for this.

Who has been breaking into the houses? Selling the crack? Robbing people? Could be that while the bible types are irritating and have their own set of problems....that some of problems in the town are caused by the NON bible types?

It's just amazing to read a thread complaining about all these crime problems and then you stroll along and blame all the problems on another group entirely.

Just a heads up. It looks like Wsucks and wonderkind is the same person. They have been trolling over on the Michigan forum all morning. Looks like he has jumped on the Christianity bandwagon over here because of the bible belt thing. Have some fun with him, he does get cranky though when asked for specifics to back up claims.

The times I have been through your wonderful State have been fantastic times for me. I do know that Michigan has had a bunch of casino's crop up and they are a two edged sword. Nice for the economy of the surrounding area, and schools usually benefit if the agreement with the State is a good one. The other side of the coin, is an increase of petty crime, and loads of drivers who haven't a clue where they are going, but are in a hurry to get there. Good luck with your decisions!

I agree that a cansino can actually cause economic damage by sucking money out of a community if not locally owned.

However, since there are already casinos draining money out of Witchita from across the state line they have a very legitimate point that a casino would probably be a net benefit to them.

I don't think the guy is a troll. Besides, one person making wild claims does more damage to their position than one could ever hope. :-)

J. Randi is an unknown quantity at this point
The city of wichita has had no master plan to even try to develope or expand into areas that will bring in people for any other reason excpt to work at a air industry plant.
You would think that they would bend over backward to bring in the casino, but it is true that the christian churches spent much time and money to defet the casino and dog track slots.
I have no idea what christians are thinking,, They do not like liquor, they do not like gays, gambling, forget about hookers, excpt when Jimmie goes "jogging" or gays when haggart is alone with his boy toy.
They say one thing and do another.
How many of the bible thumpers that voted against the casino do you think will be the first to help open the new casino that will now go to the county south of sedg. co. ?
There will be more than a few I am sure.
Now you loose the dog track, and for what so a church can feel like they are fighting for god?
You know when I used to pray I started to think I was god, when I was parying I was talking to myself so 2 and 2 you know.

It was not all the Christians that voted against the casinos. I am a Christian and I voted for it. I also believe that you have the wrong perception of most Catholics. I am not Catholic but I do know that the everyday Catholic isn't as against gambling as the Church itself. In my view, being a Christian does not mean that you can't enjoy things like drinking and gambling. You need to learn to do it in moderation. So please don't lump all Christians together. I think you would be surprised.

Default No Casino's for Wichita

Hear Hear!!!

I'm glad someone finally spoke out about the casino mess

No most of us don't have a misconception of Catholics/Christians....being married to a Catholic for 25 years now I've listening to his mother predict when the world is going to end several times and other stuff no one has heard of (even other Catholics), And my parents being Mormon, Ive learned that they are all very closed minded and bigoted religious fanatics. Preaching nothing but doom and gloom.

Why would you vote down a proposal to bring good paying jobs and money to Wichita? Casinos would have brought tourists as well as conventions and jobs.

Wichita is a place no one wants to live, and only people who need to work go.
And even these people do not live there, they live in andover, and derby. Now the casinos are going south 8 miles to put in gaming, the county and the people will loose out on funding.
When Religion gets involved in things like this I think they should loose their tax exempt status.
Wichita is becoming an arm pit. The only thing is is even been in the news for is the shooting of a woman and no one called the police for 2 hours, they only took photos on camera phones.
Kansas city is thriving [on the missouri side] with gaming rampent.
I guess the religonuts had it right, Oh wait all the towns that have voted in gaming are booming. there are even places that were not on the map that are booming now, like tunica.
This is exactly why I left wichita, it is a small minded town with a big population. If the aircraft industry and it is a question of when more than if, goes down wichita will be a rat hole.
Gambling industry is a sure way to send things down a rat hole. It's a classless, trashy thing to have in a city, which pretty much sums up the city of Las Vegas.

I'm not a religious nut, and my religion has nothing to do with why I oppose casinos. They're just stupid and trashy, and they attract exactly those types of people.

I definitely wouldn't want a Harrah's or other such eyesore in Wichita. I'd think twice about returning. I love that city. I think the Old Town revitalization is going really well.

Those who call Wichita "small minded" or have written the city off to the craphole really ought to get a good look at Baltimore.

What is it about casino's that people like so much? I've been on a few occasions when I lived in Missouri. I went to Tunica, MS with some family when I was younger. I just don't get the facination with it all.
