No casino for Wichita
So the small minded religous idiots of wichita have voted down the casino
Wichita is a place no one wants to live, and only people who need to work go.
And even these people do not live there, they live in andover, and derby. Now the casinos are going south 8 miles to put in gaming, the county and the people will loose out on funding.
When Religion gets involved in things like this I think they should loose their tax exempt status.
Wichita is becoming an arm pit. The only thing is is even been in the news for is the shooting of a woman and no one called the police for 2 hours, they only took photos on camera phones.
Kansas city is thriving [on the missouri side] with gaming rampent.
I guess the religonuts had it right, Oh wait all the towns that have voted in gaming are booming. there are even places that were not on the map that are booming now, like tunica.
This is exactly why I left wichita, it is a small minded town with a big population. If the aircraft industry and it is a question of when more than if, goes down wichita will be a rat hole.

I hear you brother.
Wichita is one stupid town. I see people leavig for kansas city and OK city all the time.
I don't know if there is any long term hope for wichita.
The christians run that town. espically the catholics, you know the people who think that aids is bad, but still not bad enough to justify waring of condoms in africa.
This from a formar hitler youth that now wears a stupid hat.

no casino - oh well
I was wondering if folks here were going to vote for it. Guess folks will now have another place to go protest, only they will have to drive south a few minutes. It really is too bad the No vs. Yes groups didn't find some common ground. I'd be curious how many that voted against it will end up going there for entertainment.

I know what you are saying, the christins are the first to vote no on something that would help the comunity.
But the first to run to the same places like vegas and gamble on the sly.
I have watched people who go to sunday church and monday are doing all they say they are against.
This is what happens when you take an obsolete 2000 year old book and try to live life today by it.
Oh well it is wichitas loss.
But all the people that say it would hurt wichita, dont get that the people who would have spent the $ in wichita are now only going to drive to a "smart" county and spend the $

The casino lost by more votes than I thought it would (and how many of those people who voted no will be seen in the casino in the neighboring county?), but the slot machine vote was close enough that it got 2 recounts. Now, not only will we NOT get the money coming in from a casino and slots, the Greyhound park will be closing down.

Paul, I see the same thing, most of the socalled christian moral people who vote to keep out the evil casino are the same ones who make trips to KC to play. They just dont want their church members seeing them go gambling. the catholic church can have bingo night and that is fine but dont let harras into the area Oh now it will be the end of the world.
This narow minded attitude is exactly why I moved out of wichita.
Now the dog track is going. I think many people will have this same attitude that it is not worth staying in wichita.
This is why they do not get more business conventions in the down town area. Nothing to do after the confrence.
With the economy slipping fast the air industry may slip, if it does wichita will see a ressission.

I returned to Wichita a year ago, my birthplace, for the first time since I was a kid....30 years ago. I was shocked to see that the place looked exactly as it did 30 years ago...only older and dirtier. The only new development was a couple of new malls on the outskirts of town. What a pity! We could not see one thing that would attract people to live in Wichita.
Are the people there determined to prevent any progress?? The above poster was right...if the airline industry ever leaves Wichita will just dry up and blow away.

I don't know. There have been several economic studies as to how casinos suck money out of an area unless there is an offsetting amount of income coming in from outside (tourist\visitor) gambling.
To that point, no one is going to Witchita to gamble so to be fair....I think a casino would likely suck more money out than actually put it in.
I live in the KC area and if you read the papers we have a steady stream of "woman embezzles to fuel gambling habit", man jumps to death off parking garage at Ameristar type stories. I like to gamble on occasion but don't gloss over the negatives and think it's going to help fix everything.
Lastly, if you are right....do some economic research....convince people and try again next year. It's a democracy and voting is private so if you make a good case...the closet gambler christians will vote for it too.

Go down to the casino just over the Oklahoma line on any given night and take a look at the license plates. They're all from Kansas.
It's just more money for Oklahoma, but the idiots in Kansas who vote against casinos will never see that. They're not stopping anyone who wants to gamble from doing so, they're just handing the profits from it over to someone else.

Good point, for some reason I thought Wichita was more like 100 miles from the state line instead of 40 or so.
Yes, it's likely reasonable to assume that you are losing money that way...but since the casino failed the first time.....try again....or consider OTHER tourist attractions as an offset.
