My wife and I are looking for a fresh start somewhere in the future (approx. a year from now). We don't have any family in Topeka, but its kind of in between my family (Southern Iowa) and my wife's (Colorado). We've only been to Topeka once for a weekend, and it seemed like a nice clean town. . We are just looking into a few possible places to relocate, and Topeka is one of them. Currently we are living in Cheyenne, Wyoming. We have an almost 9-month-old daughter, and want to move somewhere that she'll have a good future. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Wyoming, there isn't anything here except right-wing extremists and high costs of living with horribly low wages. As far as the "right-wing extremist" part, I don't really claim a political party, and get sick of people cramming their mindless dribble down my throat. My wife and I are just normal people looking for a great place to raise our daughter. Another thing with Wyoming, is that the cost of living is high and the wages suck. A friend of mine refers to Cheyenne as "Denver prices, not Denver wages." As an example, the other day a local airline was looking for an Accountant with a Bachelors Degree and Experience for $10 an hour. This state tries to keep good honest people from ever getting ahead in life. We would also be renting, and probably looking to rent a 3-bedroom house or trailer. How are the renting conditions there. Wyoming has no renters laws and is full of slumlords. My wife and I are big "outdoors" style people and not into the whole bar scene. My wife is currently in retail and I work in Television Broadcasting with an Associates Degree in IT. Any advice anyone can give us on relocating would be great. Thanks in advance.

You'll probably find the politics at least as "right wing extremist" but with a more religious tinge. Wyoming is much more libertarian.

Never heard of anybody "choosing" topeka as a place they want to go . Cheyenne is better than Topeka and you are two hours from Denver. The only good thing about Topeka is that it only an hour from the KC metro area.

My reaction is similar to kcmo's. I'd take Cheyenne over Topeka without any doubt. Something I've learned the hard way a number of times in life is that, despite the drawbacks of any given situation, there are lots of ways to make it worse. What about a place like Fort Collins?

If your mind is set on a mid-way point, I'd be considering Lincoln, Omaha, or Johnson County, KS.

Best of luck, whatever you decide.

If you like Kansas in general, have you thought of other areas? As someone mentioned, Johnson County (known as probably the wealthiest county in KS though) or the KCK area? Or the Wichita area?? I have family in the KCK area and it is great for families / raising kids. We live in the Wichita area and love raising our kids here.
As far a politics, well, I also "don't claim a political party" and have never had an issue with it! I'd say that either the Wichita area or KCK would be less "extremist"....but the general political atmosphere of KS is still much more right than left

Good luck!

I am so tired of people talking negative about my city, listing no specific facts, just talking negative. An objective look at the city's shortcomings can be useful, but just talking negative about the city unfairly prejudices readers against the city.

The economy is looking better in Topeka. The M&M/Mars Chocolate company is putting in a big plant here south of town. The project is expected to deliver 200 full-time jobs to the community when the first phase of the project is completed in 2013 and grow to at least 425 jobs. And a day doesn't go by when I don't hear an advertisement for jobs.

Best real estate website for the area is: Topeka Area Homes It permits you do a search by school district, etc. It is also the most up to date as it is the website of the local realtors. It has a calculator that includes property taxes.

The local newspaper is the Topeka Capital-Journal

The Kansas Governor's Residence, Cedar Crest, is the smallest occupied governor's residence in the United States; however, it sits on the largest piece of property at 244 acres. There are public trails across the property west of the mansion and it has a beautiful view of a forested hill.

Corporate headquarters for Hill's Pet Nutrition are in Topeka.

Topeka's Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant is the world's largest producer of earthmover tires and the corporation's sole North American manufacturer of earthmover tires for mining and construction operations.

None of which has anything directly to do with life quality in Topeka....which is highly subjective, of course....as is "unfairly".

You'd think a person coming in here to chide others about their posted views would post some glowing personal testimonials or the like.

Topeka is not the big city nor is it a small city I consider it medium size. Topeka is not as bad as people makes it. I have always felt safe people talk about crime but that is more towards central Topeka. There are more family oriented things to do here. I believe most people have negative light on this city due to Fred phelps.
