I read on city-data that the crime rate in Lawrence was above average, and the explanation given was that it was partly due to being a college town and partly some of the "neighborhoods." I'd like to learn from the residents which neighborhoods should be avoided in Lawrence in terms of more crime. Thanks in advance.

I've never heard the crime rate in Lawrence was above average............I would tell you the crime in Topeka is way the hell above average...............especially home invasions. Lawrence neighborhoods???? I think the west side is safe and I wouldn't be afraid of the north side either. I have a friend who lives on the north side and he said the neighbors all look out for each other........he seems to like it. When I lived there I lived in the south west side in a duplex and never had a problem one. Most crime is small time petty theft from college students who will obviously be dropping out at semesters end, and they're trying to get money to buy a pony keg for the weekend.

There are a few unsafe neighborhoods in Lawrence, but for the most part it's a very safe town. Southeast of Cadet and 15th is somewhat sketchy, and then over by Redbud Lane there has been drug related activities. West Lawrence is very safe, but a friend of mine just got her house broken into by some of her roommates less than savory friends over there. If you're not looking for trouble, chances are you won't find it around here. It's pretty easy going.

Lawrence is safe.

Because of the number of students bringing expensive items to college (laptops, phones, etc.), there is a problem with property crime in places where students usually live.

There are a couple of apartment complexes, one at 27th and Redbud, and another around 24th and Ridge, which seem to attract unsavory characters.
