Default Question about weird bylaws here

We moved here from Mass. about 4 years ago. I have had nothing but problems in my neighborhood by the "old timers" that have been here, since the neighborhood was established in the early 60's. There is an issue because I have children, another issue because we don't have a lawn service, another issue because my children have autism--it is just one thing after another.

We just got a new principal over at Moody school. My husband drives for a bus company for JOCO schools, and (like most other drivers), has been parking his van-sized bus over there, after hours for overnight. The reason being is that, OP has a bylaw that disallows ANY commercial vehicle in a driveway. Although we have several boats, rv's and commercial trucks in other driveways (also against bylaws here), our neighbors call immediately if they see the bus in our driveway for more than a few minutes. He has been parking in the parking lot there for over a year.

The Moody just got a new principal, and she called the bus company to complain. I don't understand this since, there is no one in the school at night, nor is there any parking needs in the parking lot at that hour. I have driven around OP for years, and most schools have buses parked in their parking lot at night and on weekends. He is out of the parking lot 2 hours before school begins, and parks there 2 hours after school ends. Also, the parking lot has been used for parking by other residents in the area, ever since I moved here. When someone has a lot of company or an event at their house, they use the same parking lot that he parks his school bus in.

My question is, does anyone have any suggestions on what we can do? We don't have two vehicles and can't afford 2. I work and so does he. The bus company was perfect, since the drivers are allowed to take their buses, to and from work. According to the school bus company, the only city that has a problem with buses being parked in the area, is OP! In all other areas of the metro, the buses are allowed in driveways, as long as they are not the big ones--which then must be parked in a school lot.

I was wondering if anyone had similar experiences and any suggestions (nice ones, please) as to how we can find a way of parking this small bus overnight. If they stop us from using the parking lot at the public school after hours, one of us will lose our jobs because we can't get a second vehicle.

I appreciate any help anyone can give!

God Bless

Good heavens, I'm sorry about your dilemma. Why towns come up with such weird rules is beyond me. usually it's because someone was pushing it and making life miserable, so the town council makes ordinances that fix it, then the ordinances get misused over time by haughty folks who have nothing better to do than worry about stuff that's really no problem.

Good luck to you. I hope you can work it out.

The main reason the principal won’t let you park the bus is insurance. If something would happen to the bus while parked at the school the insurance company would not want to cover the cost of repairs to said bus. Check with your boss and see if there is a smaller bus or van that you can use to get back and forth to work. If you have a garage you might see if the bus will fit in. As for the other problem with the weird laws you need to complain in writing to the officials when you want to complain about other offenders. Take pictures and send them along with the complaint. I suspect you are dealing with a homeowners association. Members of the association elect the leaders of the association. Ask the people next door when they will next meet, then go.

Yeah, if she lived in one of the other counties the bus would have been stolen by now and there wouldn't be a problem.

Like shooting fish in a barrel.

I hate that you have had this bad experience. THere are other parts of Jo. County, Overland Park in particular, that are more laid back. Might want to consider looking elsewhere if this part of town is good. I think the dismissive statement that this is "just Johnson County" is a generalism for a part of town that can be fun, modest and a safe place..though not as diverse as we probably should be.

That is not just Kansas. Many places have such rules that forbid the parking of commercial vehicles. That is what they make magnetic signs for. They are not allowed where I live either.
