Howdy, and thanks for the input!

Actually, I was kidding (about Kansas being crime free by virtue of being Kansas). We NYC'ers are a sarcastic bunch; none more so than your correspondent. <g>

I still say, however, that there are areas of NYC that would make the worst areas of Kansas seem like they were populated by timid school girls.

Not that it matters, but perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I would only be moving to Kansas as part of a transfer. The general employment situation present in the area I would be moving into would have no direct bearing on my employment, at least for the time being.

I appreciate the warnings that $25K (and $50K?) houses are not the panacea they appear to be. Recon may just be necessary.

Cordially,
RedManInBlueState

Those houses you see on the net - are rundown dumps.

You can buy houses a lot cheaper in Kansas then NY of course -

When I sold my house in Kansas - What I initially paid for it, it would cost no less then half a million in some parts of NY.

Kansas is more laid back then other places - There's times, I sure do miss it, but I won't be moving back there, ever!!!!! Visit yes.....

Again, good luck on whatever you do!!!

I grew up outside of Hutch. It's an old town. I wouldn't mind living there again. It has a couple of really good churches. Housing is like anywhere else. You get what you pay for. You can rent a nice place for around $400.

Dawter,

Thanks for the reply (and thanks again to everyone else, too).

I must confess I'm beginning to wonder about Hutchinson. Its two zip codes contain a total of about 100 (!!!) sex offenders (one zip code contains 77: it must be a fun place on a Saturday night ;-) My Brooklyn, NYC, NY zip code (which, very roughly, has more than the population of both of Hutchinson's zip codes together) has only twelve sex offenders. What the heck is going on in Hutchinson?

Also, city-data.com rates Hutchinson as having a crime rate of roughly 3 times the national average!

Is this small town living?!?

Moving from man made disasters to natural disasters, I noticed that the second to last hurricane struck "21.5" miles from the center of town, and that the last hurricane struck "6.1" miles from the center of town. Hutchinson had better have some great churches: clearly G-d is out to get them, and He's getting closer!

I don't know what's worse: Hutchinson, or that a cheap house (with expensive locks!) in Hutchinson still looks good compared to my current situation. ;-)

Cordially,
[whoever I am]

P.S. If, my dear friends, you should ever read a headline similar to "Fool raped, robbed, and blown to Oklahoma with his Crappy House," won't you please light a candle for me? Or at least check on my pets! ;-)

Tornadoes are not picky about where they land, there is no neighborhood that is more safe from one than any other.

There is a large prison in Hutch...it employs many, but houses more

I have friends that live there and they really like it...I have no idea how much houses cost though.

Also...since KS is surrounded by other land lying states, we don't have 'hurricanes' Unless an ocean has been moved in that I am unaware of...

Sorry I just find this humorous!

Thanks for the additional information.

I was unaware of the presence of prison in Hutchinson -- so far, I've been able to outrun the law. ;-) Perhaps the prison's "guests" are the cause of the (seemingly) high rate of sex offenders "living" in Hutchinson? Then again, the rates in both of Hutchinson's zip codes seemed high, though not equally so.

And, Ms. Smarty-pants:
a. Tornadoes are QUITE picky about where they strike. You don't see them coming up here (NYC, NY) much, do you? (I think they're afraid of going through the Bronx ;-)
b. Hurricanes, tornados: what are you, some sort of Allstate adjuster? ;-)

Cordially,

LOL
Ok so tornadoes are picky about the states they like, but the towns in those states don't seem to matter as much!
Nope American Family adjuster...LOL...j/k....

RedMan - tornado's can hit any state. The Midwest is just more prone to them. NY has had tornado's. I remember years back (when I lived there) one hitting not far from my house. It just took out the townhouses.

On the contrary....Lately, it seems even the NYC area is having its share of tornadoes :
