"So much for the friendly and informative. Thanks, Kansas."
you give a post LESS THAN A DAY and you're disappointed with the response? what, you think people are pouring over this forum every other minute looking to answer questions? that's just inconsiderate and impatient. thinking about moving to Hays, i hope i never have to deal with you.

Look again at the date stamp on the original post. It's from last year.
In reference to the swamp cooler mentioned by another poster, I'm not sure they are allowed in Hays anymore. They have been under water restrictions for many, many years, due to lack of rain and appreciable snow fall.

It's not as bad as Iowa. Hays does get snow, but it may only be a couple inches with each snowfall. An appreciable amount, 6+ inches, doesn't happen all that often.

Hays is just as windy as any place in Iowa during the winter. However, western Kansas is sort of in the "rain shadow" of the Rockies so precip tends to be less overall. 20mph+ windy days are very common in western Kansas so you have to get used to that quickly.

I lived in Hays while doing graduate work. Let me tell you from experience, swamp coolers do not work in Hays. It is already humid enough, it will turn the inside of your house into a swamp. You will get mold growing on everything. Go AC and save yourself the headaches.

I agree. You have to go further west to Goodland and points west before you really hit the semi-arid cliamate zone.

Hays is not humid. Eastern Kansas is humid! I grew up in Hays, and go there year in the middle of July... it's not a dry as say, Arizona, but it's still pretty dry. I will say though, that a friend from AZ thought it was unbearable, because of the humidity. I guess it all depends on your frame of reference.

Okay - here is the skinny,. I was transfered to Hays for the company that I worked for at the time. The entire time I lived there - 10 YEARS! - we never felt at home. My wife and I are both very social people and have lived in various places across the nation. We have ALWAYS had close freinds in every other town we have lived in - in Hays, after 10 years mind you, we had ONE other couple we bacame close freinds with. THIS IS A VERY CLOSE MINDED COMMUNITY!! If you are not from there, and your last name isn't Pffanensteil, they do not accept you. We have since moved away and the only reason i am googling "Hays" is we have to go back for a business engagement and i wanted to see if anything has changed "food - wise" since we left. Understand me, I am not a negative person, and am not trying to discourage you, just beware.. you had better be best freinds with your spouse, because he or she is the only freind you will have.
