Default KU Hawk Week and nostalgia

Yep. Hawk Week at Lawrence has begun. I hit it up on Friday, and my attitude is that I'd like to go back!

Any former or current KU people on this board? Do you miss it, what did you like or dislike about it?

Me, I liked that I could talk to many different European people in their own language, and the general sophisticated feel of the place. Add to that nearly everyone is good looking. Academic programs seemed top-notch as well. The school spirit is second to none, and there's always tons of easy alcohol around.

However, everyone was also really stuck up and hard to talk to. I guess good looking people can often just be like that.

Share your thoughts and info.

Well, I was there 1972-1976 so most of my memories have been tempered with time. Back then what is now called "Hawk Week" we called "Country Club Week" and of course we could legally drink 3.2 beer at 18. Ah, The Stables.

As a matter of fact....exactly 40 years ago today I moved into my freshman dorm room at Oliver Hall (I only remember the exact date because it's also a good friend of mine's birthday). Now THAT was a happy day.

I loved KU then and I still love it.

The kids now sure are younger than I was.

I remember being thrilled with life during Country Club Week. I thought KU was the greatest place ever; still do. I still remember the first time I laid eyes on Allen Fieldhouse. There was an ice cream social during that week and it was on the lawn of Allen Fieldhouse. A guy pointed to the building and said "that's Allen Fieldhouse" like it was a big deal. I didn't know yet just how big a deal it was.

I love the campus, I love all the buildings, I love the feel of the place, the energy, the atmosphere. KU campus is truly like nowhere else on earth.

During my time at KU (1975-1980) I lived at Lewis Hall (it was all women then), Sellards and Miller Scholarship Halls, and Jayhawk Towers. Those were the days!

Fall of '86 for my freshmen year. I believe it was still called country club week and they had something called beach and the boulevard at Wescoe hall. Live bands, big crowds....made my first week on campus great. Loved all 4 (ok 5) years there.

Oliver was my first dorm. From what I heard, back in the day Oliver was the top-notch dorm. Now it's the ghetto, as all the other dorms (except maybe McCollum) have been remodeled and many are classy with four person suites with bathrooms. Oliver has not been remodeled and is filthy and has cold showers (not even lukewarm most of the time).
It seems that the remodel however of Hash nerfed its fun artsy character. It's now as bland as Ellsworth even though many of the artists and gays still live there; I moved in there for a semester right after the remodel.

The campus is overall very beautiful, as are its people! I forgot how good looking everyone was until I visited this weekend.

Funny though, much of the sentiment I would think you'd have to be from the area (read: KS especially JoCo) to fully understand. I say this because everyone I work with is either MU (well, technically I'm an MU grad, UMKC, but I miss KU more and want to go back) or they're from ISU. Dealing with most MU people is challenging, because everything east of State Line is automatically teh best and everything in "Kansas" (always spoken with an accent of disgust) automatically sucks. That attitude gets old quickly. Notice in these very forums the minute someone says something good about KS or Johnson County, that the usual suspects will start ranting and raving and saying how great MO is (it's not).

Agreed! When they say how great KCMO is, I just say: "It is KANSAS City, isn't it?" Haha. Pisses them off. But I love Johnson County. You couldn't pay me to live in Kansas City, Missouri.

Current KU student and love it besides the ridiculous amounts of homework thrown at me.

burgler: what major? engineering has an insane amount of homework to be done, other schools not so much.

I've been there several times this week, and sure have noticed the attitude there. Not that many large keggers, a lot of small gatherings but very little worth going to. I think this is because of Lawrence PD task force walking around busting parties more lately. I guess KU making top party schools list several years ago scared the city and the administration into doing something about this... now KU isn't even in the top 20.

It's still a real neat school but things have toned down quite a bit from the glory days I guess.

My niece and nephew both are currently attending KU and they love it. They are both involved in a lot of worthwhile extracurricular activities. Quite different than from my day....when drinking was IT. I even arranged my class schedule around 3:00 p.m. Friday "Pitcher Hour" at the Stables. If I could do it all over again................
