Wouldn't the Shawnee Mission district put my husband in a long commute? He has done it before but never in the weather that that area gets. I don't think I would want hum doing that drive in winter weather.

Plenty of nice areas around KC to choose from with RE prices similar to the rest of the South. KC is not even remotely in the same category as Topeka. Go with KC if you have the choice.

Anywhere in KC would put you with at least an hour commute. I wouldn't be too terrified of the winter weather because storms, ice and snow are relatively rare. You'll likely only have a few days a year where the weather is so bad that the commute will be difficult. Just plan ahead and drive slower. At least, that's how I would approach it.

I would give Lawrence a thorough look though before giving up on it.

I wasn't suggesting you move there, I was responding to a comment by another poster.

My kids are in that school district and their gradeschool got lower marks on some of those sites but it was somewhat due to the influx of ESL kids that pulled scores down while the caught up.

With that said I was suggesting you give Lawrence a 2nd look and would really discourage a long commute.

Just my 2cents. Good luck!
