I am a single mother or 4 who has also been looking into relocating to the KC area with my mother, from SC. I need somewhere safe for the kids, with lots to do for them, and a friendly environment. I love a small town atmosphere, but close enough so I can drive to the big city if I get the urge. I am a paralegal by trade, and I mainly work in foreclosures, so I would like to live somewhere that would not be far from that type of work. I have been looking at Overland Park, Peola (spelling?), and Independence, KS. Any other suggestions? Thanks so much!

If you are looking at suburban areas I would suggest Overland Park, Lenexa, Shawnee, Olathe, Prairie Village, Lee's Summit, and Liberty. These suburban cities all have good schools, are family friendly, and not to far of a commute to Downtown and other suburban cities. You can get a good house for around 200-250K in many of these cities as well.

If your job is in the Kansas City metro area core I would not suggest moving to Paola. Paola is located quite a bit further away from the Downtown area and KCI airport. You would likely spend a lot of time commuting back and forth if your job is closer to the Downtown area or inner ring suburbs. The cities in Johnson County Kansas all have shorter commute times to Downtown and airport compared with Miami County which is further to the south.
The smaller suburban cities in Johnson County that have under 60,000 people include: Shawnee Lenexa Prairie Village Leawood Mission Westwood Fairway Gardner Spring Hill De Soto |

You want to live in Johnson County KS if you have kids. That is where the better schools are.
