Thanks for the info and feedback, Plains10, and I must apologize to all in this forum thread for getting real close to getting off-topic, if not getting off-topic completely. Maybe if there is an ongoing increased demand for ethanol made from switchgrass, it will help many of the rural counties of Kansas economically and stanch the outward flow of young adults from them. I can hope at least! Knowing very little about Kansas state government, hopefully there is room to remove any unnecessary bureaucratic red tape when someone tries to start a small business.

California is generally still a fine place to visit, and its natural beauty is tough to beat. Living here is becoming an ever-larger economic and cultural booger for me and for many.

On my trip to Missouri this past September, I had the opportunity to make a counterclockwise loop from St. Joseph west to Hiawatha, KS, then south and back west to Atchison, KS. Missouri is still my cup of tea, but I enjoyed visiting Atchison and Benedictine University very much. The drive from Atchison to St. Joe along U.S. 59 is a nice one, too.

I would absolutely agree that Kansas is the place to be. I was born and raised in NE Kansas. My husband and I have recently purchased 87 acres and personally built a rustic style home a few miles outside of a Blue Rapids - right along the Big Blue River.
We are wanting to sell approximately 50 acres of our land (approximately 34 acres of tillable ground and 16 acres of timber) to someone wanting to build a home and/or have small farm. This land butts up to the Tuttle Creek Resevior Public Wildlife Area and also has a new rural water line going down the side of it (for those of you interested in building). Another option for anyone interested in building is that my husband teaches and coaches, but does construction in the summers. He built our new home and would be willing to make this part of the land purchase if interested.
We wake up to whitetail deer and turkey in our yard on a regular basis and enjoy the rolling hills throughout the varying seasons. You would love it too!
