Cheney
Cheney is located 25 min west of Wichita Ks. close to the big city but just far enough to be out of the way of the Big city life. We are a small Community of about 2400 people. Wide variety of people, churches, stores. The school system is great. Everything you would need you can find in our small town, and if you can not find it then Wichita is just down the road. if you like the outdoors, Cheney lake is just 6 miles north of our small town.
We have seen an increase in population lately due to the fact of people wanting to get away from the city life. People around here are very excepting of newcomers and "outsiders". check us out! http://www.cheneyks.org/
good luck with your search.

dorshirlynn,
My advise if you are looking for a good engineering school in Kansas would be K-State @ Manhattan. In Kansas that is one of our "cities" but would be classified as a small town in some states.. Also, there are many small rural communities that you may want to look at for when you finish your schooling. For instance in Osborne there is Osborne Industries which has offices and business nationally & internationally in the Swine Production areas or over in Stockton there is Wilkens Walking Floor Trailer Manufacturing who also has plants and offices in other areas of the country. Then there are Schulte Homes in Plainville or Arwin and Peterson Industries in Smith Center & Sunflower Manufactuing in the Beloit area. These are all true rural communities supported by the agriculture base but with manufacturing and industrial opportunities also. And they all are quite, have low crime and good schools. And in most cases they are within 1-2 hours of a larger city with more options for entertainment and shopping. Check it out, I think you will be pleased at what you find.

Kansas living.
I think you should have a real good reason for moving to Kansas.
Dorothy left Kansas long ago..............think about why. Bob Dole doesn't live there anymore either ! I have friends that live there , and , ...I feel sorry for them........

i live in hays and i want to move. if you're in college, it's ok, or if you're raising a family or retiring, but the chief form of entertainment is getting drunk. if you're into the whole engineering thing, manhattan or lawrence or surrounding smaller towns are probably your best choice. pittsburgh, ks has an engineering school too, but i don't know much about it.
if you want a town that's growing slowly, you could consider pretty much any smaller town in western kansas, because the whole region is experiencing decreasing population. for instance, my home county of ness county had four high schools (barely) eleven years ago when i graduated; now there are two, and there really should be just one. it's not that anything different happened in the last decade, they just ran out of money.

Dr. Kenneth Noisewater:
You are way off base that there is nothing to do in Hays except get drunk. There is a fine Recreation Commission, the University has the Encore series of entertainment, PLUS there are many smaller activies that would meet the needs of everyone, except you! Can I buy you a ticket out of town?

All Small towns in very rural areas in the Great Plains, are experiencing the same declining populations problems. Its a fact of life. I can see why people would want to leave, it can be very depressing. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear...........a sad fact, but things will not change unless , there is some overpowering reason for people to stay in these places. We have become an urban society, people want all the amenities that go with the urban lifestyle, small dusty farm towns can not compete.
Sometimes , retired folks will return to these places, mostly because the cost of living is low, and because they think they can feel comfortable returning to their roots. I have seen this myself , growing up in a small Iowa farm town, nothing ever changes...........I am glad I left !

actually, i was planning to drive, so if you got three or four hundred for gas money, sure.
it must just be my imagination that the parking lots of every bar in town are filled six days a week. and i've been here long enough to sample the "entertainment" and the "job opportunities" and found both wanting.
you like it here, fine. hays is fine for certain people, but it has become abundantly clear that i need a change.

Hey, "Doc"
You could get a life in Hays if you run out to Doerfler's, buy a bike and check out the REAL Kansas. As your first post reads, you haven't been there that long, right? You certainly didn't expect the Boston Philharmonic or major league baseball, did you?
If you're a "doc", what's the problem with work? Rural areas need MDs, and if you're non-med. in a tech. field you can build a consulting business online no matter where you go. Can you teach at FHSU?
Methinks your unrest has little to do with Hays, but rather lies elsewhere...
Sorry about that.

Pittsburg is a good one to chose, I work at a steel foundry in the n.e. cornor of the state, and we get a number of next years seniors up there to work the summer months and see what it is like working in the foundry from the bottom up.
Living in rural Kansas is great. I have raised my daughter here and now she and her husband are raising their two boys also. As other people have said you are close to the bigger towns, and cities, but it is a completely different feeling in the rural areas.
You can go out side and not wonder who is lerking over the fence, etc. Just a comfortable life.
