FREDONIA, Kan. - When rancher Bill Inman decided to show there's more to America than the gloom-and-doom on the nightly news, he hopped on his horse and started riding.

And riding, and riding.

Some 1,700 miles later, he's burning through his family's life savings as he collects stories of hardworking, honest everyday people in rural America.

It's one thing to do it on a lark. My grandfather rode his horse from a big ranch outside La Cueva (sp?) NM to Eureka Kansas in the 1920's out of necessity.

I hope he is also taking pictures. The world looks different from the back of horse. Not so flat as it does from the window of a plane. Also the telephone poles don’t fly by looking like a picket fence.
