Hey everybody, so my in laws are here visiting from China and I thought it would be neat to take them to some historical sites or any place worth seeing. We are located in Lawrence, but anywhere within 1-2 hour drive is fine. I've never really been to any Civil War sites, and thought that might be interesting if there are any around here. Battlefields, underground railroad sites, etc.

We went to the Capitol since it was rebuilt, err, I mean remodeled? It's pretty amazing. We've walked around Mass St. here in Lawrence, and plan on going to the Free State Festival at the end of June. They will be here until the end of July. Last time they came to the US we traveled to Las Vegas, saw the Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Death Valley and stopped at some other National Parks. They really liked the Hoover Dam. I wish the Cosmosphere was closer, that's probably my favorite museum in Kansas. Anything in the KC metro is doable.

When in Topeka, did you go to the Kansas Museum of History? I couldn't remember its official name and when googling this site came up: Kansas Museum of History - Kansas Historical Society and what about Fort Riley: Fort Tours | Fort Riley and as someone mentioned, Abilene. Abilene has a little cluster of interesting things to see: Abilene, KS - Attractions These are all places that we have actually been a few times. We don't "do" KC so can't help with that. If by chance they like aviation, we have been here: http://combatairmuseum.org/

Seems odd that you would go all over Kansas and no really know much about a city that is only 40 minutes away. KCMO has so much to offer. I can't help you if you have to stay in Kansas, but here is what I would do if I lived in Lawrence and had international visitors:

Take them to the World War 1 Museum in Kansas City, MO. That should be your top priority. World class DC worthy museum. You will thank me for it later.

The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO. They may not want to come to America to see Chinese art, but the Nelson has one of the most important collections in the states. Must do the bloch lenses and sculpture garden too.

Steamboat Arabia in Kansas City, MO. Incredible history lesson of the 1800's.

Negro Leagues Baseball and American Jazz Museum, Kansas City, MO. Both are awesome museums for anybody interested in American history.

Harry S Truman Home and Library in Independence, MO (suburb of KC). The home is awesome, but the museum is amazing as it tells the story of the bombing of Japan.

Jessie James home and museum near Liberty MO (suburb of KC). Great story of the wild west and jessie james.

Kemper Museum of Modern Art, Kansas City, MO. Modern American Artwork.

Tour the Kauffman Center for performing arts in KCMO.

Tour Union Station in KCMO. (see what traveling exhibit may be in town as well).

Do the City Market in KCMO on a Saturday Morning.

Not too much civil war stuff in KC (just historic locations), but you might want to check out Lexington, MO (about an hour east of KC). There is some interesting stuff there although I would personally skip it unless you really want to see some civil war artifacts.

I would vote for the US Cavalry Museum at Fort Riley, and if you're willing to drive a bit farther, the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutch. Kansas has only one Civil War battlefield site (Mine Creek), and I'm not sure what it's like. The Combat Air Museum in Topeka is definitely cool.

Mine Creek probably isn't worth the drive unless you are really into that kind of thing specifically. Fort Scott Historical Site is rather nice especially if they are having some sort of special weekend. We went several times and enjoyed it.

Thanks for all the replies, I grew up in Topeka, and now live in Lawrence, but most of my adult life I spent in Hays, McPherson, and Wichita. So, no I don't know a whole lot about the KC metro area. I won't lie, I'm a little disappointed in Lawrence, I thought there would be a lot more to do here, that being said it's still better then Topeka or Hays. We will try to get a trip in to see the Harry S Truman house and the WWI museum.
