I suppose it depends on where you're from. Wichita sounds/feels like the South to me. And many people in other parts of the country do think Kansas is in the South.

Many people are morons without the slightest grasp of geography.

If a foreigner asked me where they could have the prototypical 'Murica experience, I would direct them to Wichita.

Well, yeah... I've explained to many people that Kansas isn't in the South and fought against the confederacy lol!

In terms of contemporary politics, though, Kansas has more in common with its neighbors to the south as the state is trying out the Texas model via the Brownback approach.

No they don't. In fact, almost no one thinks that.

As someone that just recently moved to Wichita, I would describe it as having a distinct "redneck, Bible Belt" vibe. Lots of country music, more churches than I would think possible given the small population, groups of people praying out loud in restaurants and other public places, lots of camo and sports apparel. The accents are different depending on the person's age. The older people sound like the people I have known from Oklahoma, North Texas or Appalachia. The younger people have a slight twang, drop the "g" from "ing" - nothin, somethin, etc. and use words like "ain't", but sound a lot like the people I grew up with in AZ and So Cal.

There are lots of small to medium towns in Kansas that will have 2 or 3 churches. Other common establishments: Casey's, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen, Dollar Store, Subway, Walmart, Sonic, honky tonk bar, one or two restaurants, maybe a grocery store. There may be a bored sheriff who runs a speed trap.

I don't agree with you.. Kansas is Mid-West.. And I think most think that... I'm from NY and I never thought KS is, was, South... I live in Kansas - and it still feels like the Mid West. I'm smack right in the middle of the Country...

Exactly - Lots of small towns. I live in one... We do have a small Grocery Store(family owned -if I recall) 1 gas station and a Co-Op Station... 3 churches... NO walmart!!!! And a few Mom/Pop stores... Nothing beats the small Kansas towns...
