The geographic center of the conterminous US is north of Lebanon, KS by the Nebraska border. Highway 281 acts as a good dividing line between the areas that are more like the Midwest to the east of there and the areas that have more in common with the western US that are west of there. SW Kansas has more in common with the Southwest US (Texas and Oklahoma panhandles) than the Midwest.

So then would SW Kansas have a south west vibe, or is it strictly more Midwestern as well?

I don't think there is any SW vibe in SW Kansas other than there are a lot of Hispanic people there now. Western Kansas is the heart of the great plains and it is the heart of great plains culture which is a culture unto itself.

The great plains kind of start north of I-40 in Texas and Oklahoma and west of I-35 in Oklahoma and go clear into Canada. Its its own place.

It is currently more similar to the nearby Southwest US as it is a cultural plurality Mexican American area due to the large commercial agriculture economy that is present there. The social culture is more similar to areas that are south of there (specifically Texas Panhandle) than areas north of there. In terms of climate, the area is more similar to other areas that are immediately south and west of it do to its position in the rain shadow east of the Rocky Mountains. The western reaches of the High Plains have a very erratic climate in general and are quite prone to drought compared to anything in the Midwest, along and well east of the Missouri River.

There's cactus and yucca growing wild everywhere... that always made it seem a little more Southwest than Midwest to me.
