I grew up in major snow country (western New York, Chicago, Minneapolis area) and lived in it for a total of 36 years....looked forward to it every fall and never got tired of it. Have missed it every winter since I've been out here.

I can hear the excitement in your posts and it reminds me of the feeling I had when I first moved my family to Kansas in 1976, after my first stint in CA.

All great shots! The grass at the 3rd and Kansas Fountain is looking really nice this year. I believe there used to be homes in that area before the city redesigned the 3rd/4th street and Kansas interchange to be a single one.

Love all the pictures. I've never been to Garden City, but it looks nice. My best friends wife is from there and loves it.
Heh, I like how the only picture of Topeka is the White Lakes Mall, it is closed by the way, we aren't all walking around in a building falling apart.. We have more then that!

I really enjoy the pictures of SW Kansas, that's a region I have seldom been to. I have a bunch of pictures of Eastern Kansas, mostly Topeka, Wichita, McPherson, and Lawrence, I just need to get them off my external hard drive...

It sure does.

This downtown has a lot of character. I hope more of the buildings get refurbished and occupied.

It's one of very few open atrium hotels left in the entire country, and of course one of the other examples is also a closed hotel in Garden City. The best and one of the only open example of this style is the Brown Palace in Denver. The Windsor has hit several snags in redevelopment, but it's on a new foundation and there is no danger of it coming down. One of the recent snags was one of the historic restoration workers had some serious health issues that delayed the restoration of the cupola. The roof and skylights have already been replaced. The Buffalo Hotel a couple blocks south was built on a similar floor plan on a smaller scale, but unlike the Windsor, it isn't owned by the city and the owner seemingly wants nothing to do with its historical status and the building sits there and rots because it's on the national register and they they don't want to do anything with it that preserves the integrity.

It's starting to improve. The Ninja Sushi and Sticky Rice restaurants are both in high turnover buildings and do great business, the store in the Windsor is new, a construction firm just renovated a building, another two are under renovation by a family from my church, and Stage renovated part of the facade and fixed their peeling plaster and damaged ceilings that had been left over from trying to cobble together a Ben Franklin Variety Store with a 1950's JCPenney store.

I didn't portray Liberal and Overland Park in a positive light either .

That is cool, I looked it up online and there are YouTube videos of someone restoring the interior. There are also pictures of the building/interior as it was in the past.
