I asked about things I could do, not things that I couldn't do!! Why waist your time and mine having to read stuff that doesn't pertain to the question asked? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize Disney is not located in KS. I'm here for a very short period of time and thought there might be a unique place to eat or shop tucked away someplace that a visitor wouldn't know about.
I thought this was supposed to be a board that is helpful not about negativity. Maybe the reason more people don't come here is because of the negative image the locals put out??? |

This time of the year it is hard to find "family" things to do in Wichita. The cold drives most activity indoors this time of the year and Wichita is really an outdoors kind of city. If your husband is interviewing at an airplane factory, you might just want to spend the day driving around and looking at the various neighbourhoods in Wichita to determine where you might wish to live should he get the job.

Ok, I'm the first to admit Kansas, and the Wichita area, has it's problems. But, I'm not going to treat the city like there's nothing to do for someonewho's visiting here. Here's stuff you can do:
Exploration Place - it's a nice science center. The exhibit about planes is cool. You can do diffeen flight simulators, including one that's like the Wright Bros flight. Kids like it. My nephew, who's now 11 remembers the different types of paper airplanes we tried out. The Wichita Art Museum has some of the best American art in the country. The glass exhibits are kinda cool. Walking on that area where you look through the glass flooring kind of weirds me out. Some of the exhibits that pass through there are great, depending on what you like. My mom was a quilter and we went to a Shaker quilt exhibit. I thought it was extraordinary. Just great stories and art reflecting the life of the Shaker community. Cowtown is a decent living museum. If you're there in the spring you'll see the gardens that are planted alongside some of the individual homes, just like in history. The blacksmith might be there, the dance hall girls, the women cooking on woodburning stoves. I once saw a reenactment of Buffalo Soldiers there. I've heard Christmas music around the shops there played on acoustic instruments. Botanica has some decent plantings. A lot of them are adjust to the local climate, but that makes sense because the plants will grow that way. Sometime there are concerts or other events there. The Sedgwick County Zoo is one of the best in the nation. They have a good variety of animals. The exhibits are modern. And, the zoo has one of the best breeding programs, bar none. I don't know their schedule, but Cabaret Old Town has been known to have some good shows with local talent. They always make me laugh, and in a good way. That has to be worth the cost of admission. There's the Crown Uptown Theater and their musicals. Old Town has the Museum of World Treasures. It is a good museum with tons of variety in its exhibits, from dinosaurs to Hollywood to sports to the Civil War and World War 1 and 2 and Vietnam. Plus the ancient history stuff that's slipping my mind, but includes a mummy - I think from South America? There's also All-Star sports with the go-carts and batting cages and bumper boats and miniature golf and driving range and arcade and rides. Saying there's nothing to do in Wichita is not accurate, at least not for someone vacationing here. For someone living here, it's a different story. We don't have weekly entertainment. I agree with that. The attitudes of the people here are an atrocity, but a visitor will never engage in a lengthy enough conversation to get that. Wichitans will be perfectly polite and even seem likeable. A vacationer could come and experience the things that make this an otherwise enjoyable city. Mod |

If you visit Wichita for 1 week you will have no reason to ever go back.
I visited there and now I have no reason to go back. It is a funpark with one ride and no plans to build more. |

I have to give a big thanks to all the people who were helpful!!!! I recieved several pm's that had great info along with what was posted here. We had a great time in Wichita!!!! Considering the size of the city and how far away another large city is there is a lot to offer here. We are looking at a move to the area (crossing fingers for a great job offer!). Saying there is nothing to do here would never cross my mind.

The best time to visit Wichita is in the spring and summer when the streets are alive with things to do and people to see. Especially during Riverfest and when all the motorcycles come to town. It was a fun city in the warm months but in the winter Wichita is kind of dead.

I agree we didn't visit at the best time of year but the same could be said with most cities in Jan/Feb. Overall it was a great time. It was nice to see how well the roads were kept. I've been to several states during the winter months and I think Kansas has some of the best kept roads.
