I've driven this from Wichita to Tucumcari, NM many times. It is 100 miles and 1 hour shorter than taking I-40 and I-35. KS has the best part of this road with passing lanes and better road quality. Don't drive more than 5 MPH over the limit on the KS section. The cops there don't give much leeway. There are also many small KS towns where the limit goes from 65 to 35 without any warning. Might be a temporary revenue source but it will deter travelers from that route.

I haven't ran into a no warning speed change in Kansas on any major highway.

I drove it and would never do it again. Lots of stop lights, ridiculously low speed limits, small town speed traps and you have to plan your fuel stops to happen before they roll up the sidewalks each night. Not to mention that it is much more dangerous to travel on a rural two lane highway with people making stupid passes into oncoming traffic. I40 is a much better option.
