family relocating to ulysses area
We are a family of 4 relocating to the Ulysses area in June. I am originally from SW Florida and my husband is from SW Virginia. He is coming to work up there, till we can follow when school lets out. I am looking for ANY information on this area because it doesn't seem like there is much to be found on it via internet. We would like to know about house rentals, the elementry and intermidate schools, also the jobs in the clerical field and most importantly about the churches. Right now I am currently working for the property appraisiers office here in Lee Co. and we attend a wonderful Methodist church that we really hate leaving.
I was also wondering how small is the area? I come from a city of about 500,000 and I have heard there is considerly less population there. And not to sound racist but I would also like to know the ethic rates, only because I am a native american that is constantly mistaken for a spanish speaking hispanic, yet even though I grew up among the many latin immrigrants in South Florida I have never learned spanish and do not care to do so any time in the near future.I would appreciate any and all of your comments good or bad. Thank you.

Ulysses is a small town in the SW corner of Kansas. The population in the town is around 5,000 with less than 8,000 living in the county. The nearest bigger town is Garden City, which has about 30,000 people. This area of Kansas is extremely conservative. I would say about 30-40% of the population of that area is Hispanic.
Hopefully other posters from the area will have more detailed information regarding your other questions.

I have lived in Ulysses my whole life and have children that attend school. This is a great place to live and raise children. I feel most people are very friendly and will except everyone. The Methodist church here is the best and has great children activities. There are youth groups for middle school and high school. I hope you are happy living here. I know we don't have alot of trees and water, but it's still a nice place to live.

Actually the nearest BIG town is Amarillo, TX, 2 hours south of Ulysses. I spent ten years in that SW area and have lots of friends in Ulysses. The industry of the town is technical agriculture, gas and oil, and the new huge ethanol plant going in.
Ulysses is between Garden City and Liberal, a bit closer to GCK but still in the Liberal trade area also.
The county is a high per capita income county due to its industry base. People are genuine, and you do not need to have any working knowledge of Spanish, as all the Mexicans speak English at the pay window.
