We lived in Dodge City, KS, for a year, now we live in Grandview, MO, a suburb of Kansas City, MO. People in Kansas are some of the friendliest people I've ever met. You just have to look them in the eye and let them know what you need. They'll tell you. Don't come with a built-in attitude, that'll only land you on an episode of COPS.

My wife is from Emporia. She has lots of relatives there.

Madison is likely now a retiree/bedroom community for those wanting < taxes & housing costs & short commute.

The Cottonwood River floods 99 several times/yr. Does not flood AFAIK in Madison proper.

Crime in KS is pretty low. IF it happens in your town, you likely know who & why. This aspect diminishes as pop. increases. I've lived in Andover, Wichita, Emporia, LeRoy, Yates Center, Leavenworth, McPherson, Manhattan, Glasco . . .

Emporia should be a good fit with Madison. Your competition for housing & jobs will be college students (who likely have less flexible schedules than you).
