Wichita is like all cities, it has problems if you're in the wrong part of town. I came from that area, and now reside in Albuquerque, which likewise has some problems, but both are "around" half-a-million population, so there are always bad apples. Las Vegas too.
I would also ditto someone who advised checking out the smaller, semi-rural communities to the NW of the airport...on the highway to Hutchinson. (They WERE rural communities only 10 years ago! You are then 15-20 miles from downtown, but enjoy a more "small town" lifestyle. In a similar vein, you should at least take a look at Augusta, just east of Wichita...small town living again, but 30 minutes to downtown for shopping, entertainment, etc.
Kansas a great family place, and I was never one for the bar scene, clubs, etc. anyway. I know Las Vegas has much to offer in that vein also, outside of "The Strip." With the "social situation" IN Wichita...I'm pretty sure employment opportunities wouldn't be too difficult for you there.
Good luck!
