Default From Vegas to Wichita

My husband and I currently live in Las Vegas. We are planning to move to Wichita in August 2006. Just wondering if anyone can help us a bit with some information regarding housing. We visited there and liked the West part of the city. We have no children, and 2 dogs. I am a Registered Nurse, and he is a Licensed Social Worker. We're looking to buy. We're looking for square footage b/t 1700-2000, and at least 3 bedrooms.
Anyone know what the job market for Social Workers is like there? That's been the most troublesome thing to find out. Thanks a lot.

If you move to Wichita, be aware that Sedgewick County is the highest taxed county in Kansas...so if your planning on buying a house, be prepared to open up the wallet wide.
As far as getting a job as a Social Worker, they probably can use all the help they can get. ...
Good Luck.

Kansas is a neat state. I doubt I'd want to live right in Wichita. But I suppose it'd be closer to work if you have jobs there. Have you looked around the smaller towns too?

Property taxes are high here. I live in Greenwood County and we pay 2.4% of the assessed value and they do reassess. Our house that was valued at a bit over 40,000 dollars was taxed at over 900 dollars.

Housing will cost more in Wichita than in Greenwood county, but there are few jobs here. You are much more likely to find jobs there. Nice hospitals, etc. But housing will no doubt be cheaper in Wichita than in Las Vegas, or I think so anyway.

Good luck on your move.

I just moved to Wichita from Kansas City. What I've found is the people are friendly, the cost of living wonderful and the traffic not an issue at all.

I lived most of my life in California. And bought into the myth that the Midwest was beneath me. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of raising a family. Let the naysayers head to Hawaii. Kansas is a place you can come, make roots and feel like you are part of a community.

It might not be for everyone, but it's not a bad place to live.

Post Wichita metro info

If you are looking at moving to the Wichita metro take a look at Andover to the east of Wichita. Other towns that are gaining people include Valley Center, Maize, (northwest Wichita) and Goddard which is west of Wichita. All of the towns provide more of a "rural" atmosphere within close proximity to the city itself. Housing is also affordable compared to the coasts.

I moved from Wichita to South Carolina, looking forward to the beauty of the state and the closeness of the mountains and the beach. However, we end up working all the time to make ends meet because housing costs were higher than Wichita, with less good job prospects. The cost of living seems much higher here, especially on essentials such as groceries. I loved living in Wichita and miss it.
