Dodge City is one of the windiest places in the US. They have wind farms in Ford County outside of Dodge City.

Solis, As much as I would like to be positive about a community.... I would not suggest, to anyone to live in DodgeCity KS. It is hot in the summer, cold in the winters, the humidity is nearly unbearable, plus the dust. The only pleasure there is during the cool spring rains, but when the rain stops, the odor that comes from the stockyards can make you feel dirty. My brother lived there for many years and I would visit. He did not like it there. He only stayed because he had a good job there.
I currently live in Colorado Springs CO. (formally from central KS.) the weather here is mild, and this area has many opportunities in professional medicine. If you have any respiritory difficulties the altitude may be difficult for you 4000 + ft. There are many small communities near this area that are very pleasant and a large percentage of the persons here are of retirement age. Something to think about.

Oh my gosh. Every time I even consider moving back to that area I remind myself of how windy and humid it is there. The wind blows nearly 24/7.

Since you live in FL you are probably used to humidity. I can remember on summer mornings..opening the door at 7 am and being greated by a hot blast of air. Humid...farmers waiting for the dew on the wheat to dry so that they can cut it...I do miss the wheat.

The smell is from the beef packing plants. To put it mildly my kids used to call Dodge City "cat pee town." I have a friend who used to be a truck driver and drove through Dodge many times and all he he can say about it is that it stinks.

Why do they hold Dodge City Days during the absolute most hottest time of the year? Someone really needs to suggest changing the date to the Chamber of Commerce.

Well...
Thank you for all the advise and comments,I have mixed feelings about the place, however the position they have offered me is actually excellent,(maybe they can't find anyone to go there.LOL)
Thing is I will be working most of the day in a building with A/C, humidity will be a minimal problem (same in Florida) the smell, I am not sure if the building will pick up any of the smell, after all, there will be sick people inside the building.
I am visiting the area on May 1,2,3 I think that will give me a good idea of what I am dealing with.

I have been offered a position also in North Carolina, but in a tany remote little town near the Virginia border and with considareble less pay. I am visiting that area the 3er,week of this month.
I will compare the two and make (I hope) a wise choice.

Thanks to all, you are all very kind

Solis

These Are Latino Gangs. They do more than Spray paint. How about Drive by shootings???? There's around 11 gangs in Dodge City. It was reported on the News about a year or so back.

I hear it was a nice town years ago, but things have changed. Businesses aren't growing there.....It's been taking over by illegal immigrants who have no respect for anything.
I don't live in Dodge City; I was just trying to make a point. If Dodge has a low number of violent crimes per 100,000 residents, how can it be a crime-ridden place? I never said there wasn't crime in Dodge City -- in fact, there is at least some crime in every American city of this size. I believe you about the gangs, I believe you that there are at least some drive-bys, I believe that there are illegal immigrants, and I believe that your friend was unlucky enough to get murdered (and I feel bad for you for that loss) -- I just don't believe that Dodge is crime-ridden. But if you have concrete proof that the local police are falsifying their crime statistics to make Dodge City look good, I'd like to hear it.

Clint, maybe I can help explain things...statistics aside...this is my opinion and might explain how others are seeing things.

I moved to NW Oklahoma in 1989 (then up to Protection and then Ashland, KS) and I would drive up to Dodge City to shop. The mall was vacant..very few shoppers. The town was dying. I read an article in the newspaper a few yrs after that, that the hispanic poplulation was increasing in Dodge. This seemed (at that time) to be a welcomed thing. But their numbers RAPIDLY increased. Any time a population increases, so do the crime numbers. There weren't any gangs before the huge increase in the population.
Maybe the stats are low when you compare them to other cities of the same size. But when you actually live in a town and see the population increase as well as crime, then the stats don't really matter.

Yes, there are gangs and gang activity in Dodge City.

I live in Oklahoma, just below Kansas. Dodge City was always a favorite to me, even as a kid in Michigan where I was raised on a Dairy farm. I guess for one reason it's a cattle town, for another the series "Gun Smoke".was set there. You can still watch the full series on line Gunsmoke : Full Episodes : tvland.com
I really don't know that much about Dodge City. I just thought I'd drop you some links so you can check the place out yourself.

Showdown in Dodge: Gang violence cripples the historic Wild West | KSN.com - News, Weather, Sports - NBC - Wichita - Great Bend - Garden City - McCook - Kansas | Local News

It says 10 gangs. My Bad, thought it was 11. This was reported on the Wichita News Last year...Right before I left Kansas...

That's a lot of gangs for a small town.....Believe me - it's got crime...I'm originally from NY and I never seen what I have seen in Dodge City.

My husband and I moved here for work nearly 3 months ago. I did my research before we moved but it doesnt prepare you enough. The constant smell of the meat plants and cow poop are overwhelming. The old houses with lots of character get gobbled up by slum lords or illegals that have no intentions of keeping the houses looking good. Its a good think you speak spanish cause alot of places require it. We moved to Cimarron cause dodge was just run down. We get whiffs of the glorious cow poop but its better than dealing with dodge. We are already looking into moving away from here. Oh and the walmart in dodge is the pits.
