SALteacher,

I'm am not a teacher but I can vouch for Kansas. I did not grow up here and spent time in the military and moved quite often. All in all the Topeka area is the best place we have lived. There are plenty of things to do and Washburn is perfect size, although they have an education program I'm not sure about a masters program in Education. Topeka is diverse and each school in the district seems to have adiffrent make up of students. There are many rural districts. We are in a rural district to the south and love it as parents. There are some pains in the district and we are combining and moving some of the students and classes. I.e. moving all the elementry students to one school in the district while making the first school a junior high.
As for your wife nursing is a wide open field and she will have no problem finding a good paying job. Again Washburn has a nursing program.
You may look online at the Capital Journal if you want to look at the want ads.
There are many districts and I'm sure that each has there own site, 501 has been listed as well as Washburn Auburn, you may look at Santa Fe trail USD 434 for a more rural location.
If I can help with information post back and I will do what I can.
GOOD LUCK

I'm a teacher in NE Kansas and have heard that the district administration really jerks teachers around in Topeka. Granted, that's from the union's perspective so take it with a grain of salt. I'm sure you could do a lot worse than teaching in either Topeka or Wichita. If you choose Topeka you'll have better access to the University of Kansas in Lawrence which has one of the better schools of education in the country if you're looking at grad work at some point. Good luck.

The rural school districts also need new teachers. Two of the districts within 12 miles of me needed teachers. Unless you really want a city life, the rural setting is more laid back, people are generally easier to get along with, (you will always have the a**-holes in any town) I've been in Portland Oregon and Louisville, Kentucky and came back home to my rural hometown. But that is just my opinion, I've lived in small towns all my life, and just prefer them.
