Hi, do not know if you have all ready moved to Ft. Scott or not, but it is a small town, quiet living, I enjoy it. I have family that lives there, they have been there for over 10 years. It has the same thing most small towns have good people, people that think things can be better, which is small % of those that live there. I hope that you enjoy it there.

A great little town with a lot of history. There are many things to explore in the area and everybody seems happy when I visit. It is one of the little known Kansas gems. I was always impressed by the cleanliness and friendliness when I visited. It is one of those areas that is enjoyable to visit. It is also the County Seat. Glen

Fort Scott is a wonderful little town! You are less than 100 miles from Kansas City and Pittsburg Kansas is just a short drive away if you might need something there you can't find here. Buying a home is the way to go as finding a decent rental house is nearly impossible. here is a website of a realty company here in town with wonderful houses for sale. I have recently moved from Fort Scott to Arizona, (Surprise and Safford, long story..) Still have not sold my Fort Scott home. Yoiu very definitely are going to a buyers market...But unlike Arizona, selling later will be a PROBLEM.
Weather is of course quite different. Fort Scott is just south enough to not endure quite the severity of Kansas City in the winter, but still compared to Arizona it is severe.
Getting settled in and all is easy. The clerks for licenses, registrations and all the rest are small town nice and make it quite easy. The town itself is quaint and can be quite enjoyable. You should make plans for really enjoying yourself during the Good Ole Days celebration.

I have family in the Ft Scott area and we're seriously considering a move but I'm curious about the employment outlook. I am currently employed in the business office of a 75 doctor medical clinic. Also, I am curious about the property taxes.

As much as I love Fort Scott, the employment prospect is bleak. I would find the job first and then move there. Housing is very readily available and will not be a problem.

Non-farm employment has decreased about 20% between 2000-2005 for Bourbon County Kansas, which includes the town of Fort Scott. Housing prices should be quite affordable, but I would definitely make sure you visit the town first before you decide to move there. It is often better to secure a job first before moving to a smaller rural town. The nearest bigger cities to Fort Scott would be Kansas City and Joplin.

Ft Scott
Fort Scott is a nice town, but the taxes are outrageous, drugs are an ever growing problem and it seems as though noone cares anymore. Medical in this town is just no good, it like everywhere else is all about money!! They don't care if you live or die just give them money. And jobs are some of the lowest paid in the state.

i visited fort scott 2 y times this year and bought a small piece of land outide ther which i plan to build on and gorw some vegetables.. its over 6 acres of land/.. i thought there were signs like most rural areas of decline.. but i liked the history of the town and i think it has a future./.. epecially with agriculture being linked to etnaol prodiction i think agricultural commodities will generate income to the area.. i always feel once a town is too bulilt up it looses the rural quality that attracts me to it in the first place.. i like that the town has some descent ethnic restaurants... mexican and chinese and some neat shops.. i am currnetly form the east so i look forward to my changes there//
