An earlier thread asked about the area.
My son who is currently in Baghdad Iraq says he has orders to go to Ft. Riley later this year. He doesn't get time to make many calls but he asked me about sending him info about the Ft. Riley area, which I did. Seems Ft Riley and that whole area is going to expand big time as the Big Red One [1ID] and other units grow. He currently does not have a vehicle at his present CONUS Post, Ft. Stewart, Ga. but will need one. Any thoughts about Cars/Trucks for him once he gets to Ft. Riley? ![]() |

Depends. Is he single? Planning to reside on post or off?
Where he lives may be a big factor in his decision. While there is a rather large car-club mentality amongst the younger Soldiers here how far he commutes may be a bigger issue for him. If he is an avid outdoorsman then I have to say go big or go home. Hunting here is almost a year round sport. |

It will depend on the housing availability. Since he is single he will probably be on post with whatever unit he's assigned to.
He is an outdoors guy, Shooting, Fishing and Hunting are not new to him. As you say though the younger guys like the Cars but he might go for a nice truck, especially if he takes advantage of the Wild Outdoors. ![]() |

The 2 main towns are Manhattan and Junction City. JC is much more military friendly than Manhattan is. Although Manhattan is much better than it was before the Big Red 1 was sent to Germany. Gas is 3.50 right now in Manhattan, usually a bit cheaper in JC.
I have bought 3 new vehicles and not one of them in Manhattan, worst prices. Definitely have him check around. Milford is the place to go for fishing, Tuttle is ok and south and east is council grove which is suppose to be good. The east side of the fort has public hunting ground, they post which areas are open each day. RLFuller is right about hunting. Really good quail and pheasant. Some dove and turkey are pretty good. Lots of deer and some elk. Hunting If he likes good food at restaurants he may be out of luck. Mostly chain's and some small mom & pop places. JC is suppose to have a good place for steaks but don't know what it is and Manhatta has Doe's Eats (pricey). |

the local establishments I'm sure.
JC has to be better then Hinesville, Ga. Is Rusty's a Bar/Pub kind of place? [Manhattan]Read something about it but I can't remember where I read it, Lol I would think in Kansas that Steak was a staple food. I wonder if Ft. Riley has a Gun Club, for shooting Sporting Clays, Trap and maybe a long range and pistol range, maybe off post? |

Ft Riley has a Personally Owned Weapon (POW) Range that is open every day/weekend. If I remember correctly it can fire both rifles and pistols. Pistols I am sure of; rifles I think so, but am not 100% sure.
Plenty of pubs and bars in JC. Manhattan offers up Aggie Ville. A 2x3 block area that is nothing but clubs/bars/eateries. |

Briggs is an auto dealer that supports the army and gives great discounts on vehicles!! Briggs even has an online store I believe.

my son can locate a vehicle.
I checked Briggs website and at least from the website there seems to be more late models. I'd like him to deal with a reputable dealer and since he is pretty squared away I'm sure he will get advise from fellow soldiers on good places with honest deals. Thanks for the input on the shooting ranges, fishing, hunting etc.He will sure love to spend some free time there. Any good local Military Bars/Lounges and ones to stay away from? Any areas that are trouble spots? |
