Sammie:
Glad you have fun during "Dodge City Days." Too bad the town doesn't have more events. Thanks for writing, Claire

Manhattan is a very friendly place to live. Especially for sporting events. In addition to that, there is country stampede, New Year's Eve (pretty big deal), etc. One pretty common trait in all of the towns in kansas are fourth of july celebrations. Lots of parades and fireworks. Basically, everyone in all the towns just come out.
Also, in Arkansas City, we had a bunch of things like that. Arkalahla, the car show weekend, etc.

Claire, we've lived here for eighteen years. We have two children, 11 and 18, who have gone through school here and we couldn't be more pleased. We've had the opportunity to move elsewhere but so far nothing has had a better combination of small-town-friendly and close-to-the-action (i.e. Kansas City). Feel free to ask more about Manhattan!

I'd love to hear more about Manhattan! Glad you are so happy there!! Do you think the town might grow fast in the coming years? What is the present population?

Block party
My parent's neighborhood in Prairie Village (Kansas City suburb) has a block party almost every year. My folks have lived there nearly 60 years and are the old timers on the block!
My neighborhood in Shawnee had a few when our kids were little, but haven't done it in recent years. I guess the person who used to organize it moved.

Thanks for the info. Maybe someone else will start organizing block parties in your area again. Claire

Block Parties are Alive
I grew up around block parties!! Yes, they are alive and well. I tend to see them in the quasi-suburb communities, outside the city limits.

The county clerk in Cheyenne County (where Bird City is located) is a man. I doubt your sister is him?? Maybe she's the Bird City Clerk?

There are a lot of block parties here in Salina as well, sometimes multiple blocks on the same street. I think we have a parade of some sort about every holiday and both high schools have Homecoming parades. Santa Fe days are another big one and the Smoky Hill River Festival has about overgrown Oakdale Park. It is kind of nice to see the community getting out and spending time together. Glen
