What about Sublette or Satanta What can you tell me about those towns?
Both of those are farm towns. They would be similar to Cimarron, but with a larger Hispanic population. Both Cimarron and Sublette have farm-based economies. Haskell County is flatter in topography.

Default mentioning tornadoes...

I am scared of tornadoes....but more afraid of earthquakes!!! Especially in California, I would be afraid the whole state would fall into the ocean like they say it someday will! I moved here from CO so the humidity kills me. They say it gets really bad in summer, California may be humid, for me in CO it was a change. We lived over by the mountains and never had severe storms, so I am not used to that either. The lightning scares me....

Cali,

Sublette and Santanta are much preferrable to Garden City. Both towns have airports, not commercial connections, but nice runways. Hispanic population is much less than Garden City. Commercial air connection is available at both Garden City and Liberal.

Sublette is tending to be more in the Mennonite area. Housing is cheap. The town is deeply religious to various organized religions. It is a wholesome town with a good school system and a community with high values. Sublette is a very prosperous community. Population is less than ten thousand.

Santanta is 8 miles west, has a nice little hospital. It has several industries going there. Again, prosperous, but not so much as Sublette. Lots of big feedyards, large farms, oil and gas industry, Cotton Gins, Ethanol plants. and other money generators in the area.

Use the direct personal message on this forum to contact me. I can put you in contact with people in those towns. I just spent all of last week in Sublette. I know almost everyone there.

Default New to Garden City

Hi! I recently moved to Garden City from Texas. I never thought I'd end up in Kansas, but my husband and I decided to relocate in order for him to obtain a promotion. We were nervous and had come to Garden City twice to check it out. I guess I was suprised that it wasn't as small as I imagined. The zoo is great and there's a Starbucks inside the Target. We chose to live in an area called "Southwind". We got a really nice house and our 4 yr old loves the idea of a basement. Our neighbors are very friendly and the people here are super nice. We found a great school and a great church. We have had a lot more rain than we are used to in Texas! It isn't nearly as hot, at least not yet. It's very flat open and it does get windy here. Shopping is what has been hardest on me. I never lived further than 15 min from a mall. I did spend a lot of time at Walmart and Target the first 2 months we were here. Trying to decorate was stressful. I even drove 50 miles to Dodge City's Hobby Lobby twice! I've learned to use the internet to buy things. A lot of places have free shipping for 100 dollar order. There's also another thing that I had to learn. No one is in any hurry to get things done. We had trouble getting our washer and dryer from the local Home Depot and ended up going elsewhere. We also had to wait on the home inspector who is also the home warranty holder to come out and look at our heating unit. We also spent days waiting for our sprinkler system to be looked at. We are still waiting. So I finally decided that it will get done and I have to have patience. I am looking forward to summer and finding things to do with my son here in Garden.
We've been here 3 months and I really like it. I wish you the best.

What can you say about Sublette or Satanta?
I had a friend from grammar school whose family moved from Kansas City to Satanta because her extended family ran a farm out there and they wanted to be closer to their relatives--and because they were super-religious and felt that the conservative suburban county where we lived was somehow getting too "worldly." I found it ironic that they moved to a town with "Satan" right in the name. Anyway, I went to visit one summer and realized that she didn't even live in Satanta- rather, she lived a full 45-minute drive from the town. And the "town" consisted of a couple blocks of ranch-style houses, a couple restaurants and a giant grain elevator. If you like rural living, it's fine, but it is incredibly tiny. We went to Garden City with her church youth group and it was like going on an outing to the big city. They were extremely excited because the town had a bowling alley, mini-golf, and two KFC's. You may be used to the rural areas of California, but I will tell you now that it will still be an enormous culture shock. I would advise taking a trip out there before making a decision about moving.

I've been to Garden City and I have to say, you couldn't pay me to live there! Talk about isolated. The closest actual city to it is Denver, and I think that would be at least a 4 hour drive. I spent three days there and was stir-crazy by day two!
