Default Is this illegal?

Ok so my neighbors just got their electricity shut off and they have alot of children. I thought just to be a good neighbor, they could hook up to an outside extension cord for a light or to play a movie. Is this illegal if they have my permission?

You should be fine as long as they have your permission. Just becareful that they don't over do it...Specify what and when they can use it, or you could find yourself paying out the nose for electricity. I also suggest that YOU have the cord and bring it in when you are gone..kind of a scary thought. Even the nicest people can do stupid things when their children are effected.

Its likely a violation of building and/or fire codes.

Technically it is probably a violation of the fire code but it is not really a violation of the law per se. The electric company doesn't care as long as they are paid for it. When the ice storm hit here in GA 9 years ago, I ran one from my generator to my neighbour's house so they could have a few lights and keep their food from spoiling because we did not have power for almost 3 days.
