I looked into this out of curiosity once, and there is some truth to it. The catch is you have to agree to build a stick-built home on the land. If these are places you really want to be and live, I guess it's worth a look.

Thank you it is good reading and seems like a very common thing. I did read that one would have to live in the home for 5yrs though. I wonder if we can build our own home or if a local builder must do it? I am also looking at the business land as well.

marquette, ks. giving our free land i think there are some building requirements or some sort of "mobile" requirements but it's a good community, i grew up there and would love to move back. the jobs are between 7 and 30 miles away. great school system USD 400

There is no such thing as a free lunch, have you not heard that? Those little towns have empty lots that they will give to someone who will build a house on them and live there for so many years. Problem is, that those lots are empty for a reason, dont you think?

It is a trade-off. Free lot in exchage for more than the value of the lot in taxes. Did I mention, there is no such thing as a free lunch?

Ellsworth - Small dumpy town with a nice big prison in it.

Kanopolis( it's right outside of Ellsworth) nothing there.

Holyrood, I think it has a gas station or 2...

It's been about a year since I've been to those towns.

I agree with Jim West - nothing is free!!!

Default Value Of The Land

We read some of the requirements on the "free land" or "free lot" program. First, the cost of building the house may be more than what it will actually be worth when you finish it. The lot/land is probably worth $3,000 or less, possibly a lot less. These towns are trying to attract new citizens because their population is declining. I would like to do it but the cost of building would be too high. The population of the town we moved into is declining but they don't give away free lots/land mainly because the best I can tell, they don't like people moving in from anywhere else.
