Default Where to live in Manhattan?

We're moving to the Manhattan area within the next few months. Are there any "bad" areas to avoid? Where do most people prefer to live?

I have lived in the Manhattan area all my life and there really isnt a really bad place to live there. Mainly your annoyance areas are going to be right around the college.
The best time to rent or move there is during the summer since the students are gone and the nicer apartments are available for rent. Around KSU stadium and Memorial Hospital.
If you find an address and want to know about the area let me know...
Best Wishes in your search!
Sharon

If you are moving there because you are a student, apartments are plentiful. I always preferred to live in a house which is renting the basement or rooms rather than an apartment complex.

Plus, I always rode a bike or walked to school, just to avoid the parking hassle. Its such a small town, its very doable.

If there is a bad side, its only about a two block swath and you will know it as soon as you drive through it. So, no need to feel anxious about your move.

Are you a future or returning student? I loved Manhattan, had many great times and made a lot of memories and friends in my short time there. As an older non-traditional student, I never had a hard time fitting in or feeling alienated.

Have fun in aggieville!

Basically, (back in the late 70's and 80's) the south side of town was probably more disadvantaged and the West was more affluent to put it bluntly.

If you are a student be careful of slumlords. Back then the slumlords would buy an old house and make as many apartments out of it as possible. They would not fix anything when it broke. Most knew that students don't have the time and money to pursue any type of legal action against them. Even if they did they would have to find another place to live which is not easy when there is a shortage of housing during the school year.

Also, there were other slumlords that would take Army barracks and make apartments out of them on the south side of town. There were several along and north of the flood dyke. They were rented to anyone but primarily those on fixed incomes/welfare lived in them. Again, this was a long time ago so they may not exist today.

Manhattan has come a long way and cleaned up the downtown area since I lived there. I was raised in a Military home and went to school there.
The town is ok but it is not somewhere I want to live permanently.
