What's Wong with Wichita?
Okay, so I'm a bit unsettled about my family's move to Wichita. I've been reading posts and now am a bit "FREAKED" out about where we're moving to. My husband and I will be there in the next few weeks and will be working at McConnell AFB. We've found a new home that is East Blake Court, off of Pawnee and Rock Road. All the research I've done tells me its an OKAY area - it's not Andover nor Derby - but okay. Good news is that we're renting, can anyone tell me what the area is like? I need the low down skinny on this. Is it horrible? Is it crime infested? demographics? We're moving from a town in California that has it's share of crime and problems - but we live in a fairly affluent area right now...HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

It is an excellent area and as good as the 2 suburbs you mention. You will have good schools and great shopping almost within walking distance and almost no crime to speak of. You can go to Kansas news, sports, jobs, cars | Kansas.com and click on the crime map and see where to move and where to avoid in Wichita.

That's a decent enough area I suppose. Good luck with your move.

Can you elaborate on "decent enough"? Can you give any thing that would be questionable? I guess on a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate it? Ten being ideal (Beverly Hills) and 1 being slums. I've looked at the school in the area, and their test scores are a bit low comparatively speaking.
I appreciate your reply...thank you!

Thats a Ok area, alot of Apartments around there.
I would say its a 5 or 6,I believe thats pretty close to McConnell AFB.
I dont think you would have any problems.
Keep in mind that in Wichita a good area might have a bad one a few blocks away.Hope i helped ya.

I wouldn't say it's a slum. No way. But it sure ain't no Beverly Hills! I'd put it at a 5 probably.

Wichita is not a great city to do things in. I mean if you want to go to bars with live music or listen to blues it is not a good place, not a great place to vacation, but rent is fairly cheap compared to many parts of the country, homes are not as high as the rest of the country, taxes are high, but this is becsuse there is nothing in the line of tourisim to bring in any one. No one goes to Wichita to vacation. For work it is an ok place. there are two hills in the whole town where you can see some of the city.
It is a very flat and drab place as far as nature.
You have to take it for what it is.

I think your post in general is off topic. Nobody here asked about whether or not Wichita was a good-time destination or not. The OP is asking about a specific neighborhood.
But while we're off topic...
I think I've heard this sort of thing enough to make me vomit. I was talking to a guy at Panera Bread the other day and he was b*tching because he couldn't order Chinese food at midnight. Maybe I'm getting old but if I eat anything after 8pm I'm have issues. He also complained about the "lame bar scene" downtown. This is not New York City or Las Vegas. If you are looking for an all-night party every night of your life then this - and most other cities this size in the middle America- is not where you should be. To listen to some of the locals whine about it it seems like they think they got some sort of raw deal....like someone screwed them by making them move to such an aweful place where they can't....order chinese food at midnight, listen to live music and go to bars and clubs at 3am, party party party etc etc. So move. You won't hurt my feelings.
