North Topeka is statistically the safest area in town to live on and the people over here get along with each other very well. Yes, there are bars over here where there are drunks walking out of, but that's on any side of town. And when they are walking around, at least they aren't driving drunk and killing people like the West side. And they don't even bother you. And yes the mission is in North Topeka, but people from all sides of town come to hard times and have to go there. I'm seriously offended that you would say that the only side of town that people that have made a life for themselves is the West and Southwest side of town. My entire family lives in North Topeka and they are all well off and definitely NOT white trash. And if you think that moving to a smaller town is going to get you accepted as a person of color, you got another thing coming. I have lived in small towns and they are far more racist than the people in the city. They like to "stick to their own". So I wish you luck with that one. You really need to think about what you're typing and saying if you don't know what you're talking about. You can't live by here say.
I'm very sorry I offend you I didn't mean to. It was a forum post I read somewhere about Topeka and their citizens, and I must have misinterpeted about North Topekans and Topekans, in general, being white trash. No, it wasn't posts here, it was somewhere online. That's the last time I'm going to believe anything I read on online forums. But, the posters must hate this town so much. I don't hate this town, I'm just frustrated I wasted my time and money to better myself to get an Associates degree in Computer Networking and A+ certificate but I can't find a single Tech job. But, I'm not going to give up since someone is hiring for an IT job in the Topeka area But I love the town because of the medium size, I know my way around town faster than Dallas, and it's home of Washburn. I was born and raised in Topeka 25 years ago, ready to start a new career in IT which is Information Technology, buy a house, and start up a family before I turn 30. For people who is well off, that is where I read to buy a house, on the west side near Fairlawn or Gage but I don't get it. I will probably buy a house in the North Topeka or Highland Park areas which is another quiet part of town and I lived in Highland Park when I was a kid, and the area was quiet.

As for smaller towns, my mom was born and raised in one, she put up with racism when she was a kid but haven't put up with any when she moved to Topeka in the late 1970s. She told me there's not a lot of opportunities for IT professionals in smaller towns than towns like this one where you have a chance for a Tech job like working for the hospital, the state, city, or phone company. I also have family who live in North Topeka and they never experienced racial tension. In fact, I never experienced racial tenision in this town, either, but don't get me wrong, there's still racism in Topeka and this
world, but NOT all Topekans and people in this world are racist buffoons. My family told me North Topeka is very peaceful and they do not hear any loud music, emergency vehicle sirens, or the police helicopter which I hear every night. Well, you do hear sirens, but it's not like Hi Crest, Central Topeka, or East Topeka areas where it's a daily occurence. There are also Black, Hispanic, and Asian people who live in North Topeka and probably like it. No, I'm not talking about the people that are down on their luck and live at the mission, I do feel sorry for them, but people who bought houses in North
Topeka.

you know, when I lived in Lawrence in the mid-90's it was common knowledge that Wichita was the town to avoid as it was full of crime and other undesirables. Looking back, no-one went to Topeka either.

If you would like information about suburbs of Topeka, please email me: lisaslavin@stephensre.com. I am Realtor in Baldwin City and I know a lot about Lawrence, Overbrook, Lecompton, Lawrence, Baldwin City and Eudora. These towns are all South of Topeka or Southeast or Southwest. They are a lot different than Topeka, however many people live in these areas and easily commute to Topeka because the I-70 Turnpike Highway is very easy to get on to and a very fast commute into Topeka.
If you find Topeka is not a good fit for you, I would love to help you learn about these communities and help you relocate.

Say what?! We lived in Maize for 4 1/2 years mid to late 90's. It was not a town to avoid because of crime.

But Maize is a small town just outside of Wichita. Wichita itself does have a high crime rate on a national scale and especially a Kansas scale (because Kansas is known as being one of the safest U.S. states in terms of crime). In fact, the last time I looked up the 2006 statistics for Wichita, I remember the violent crime rate being more than twice the national average. Low crime? I sure don't think so.

Topeka was recently named the top rated city for crime for cities in its population range (two or three years ago). Im sure you have heard Fred Phelps is located there. I would recommend one of the smaller towns that surround Topeka. I live in the Holton area, about 25 miles north of Topeka. It is a beautiful small town with very little crime. Good luck

Hi-this is elaine again-has anyone gotton rid of fred phelps and his gang of hate mongers, back there??? I think he needs a radical check. People who are "gay" or "lesbian" are people too, just like you and me!!!

Out here, in ca, we have seen his butt-ugly face on tv. I think that i even worked with one of his daughters at denny's, back in 1974, and she was weird, back then, too.

Would it be, if the media, would just ignore him and not give him the attenion he craves??? Someone needs to shut him up!!!

When i was living in topeka, in 1998,' i was riding to super walmart with my ex-husband, and we swerved to miss one of them goons. Then, we laughed and told each other that he was a lesbian just waiting to come out and i had a gay man inside, waiting to come out. No pun intended.

As far as topeka, well, i have voiced my opinion on that. I would love to hear more good stuff about topeka, and less bad stuff. Right now, humidity and heat is what bothers me about topeka, nothing else. I have a mother, brother and family, daughter, and grandchildren, plus a grown son, too, who still lives there. This part of california is my home but topeka will always be in my heart.

Peace to all who reads this-elaine

Ok-last time that i will reply, for awhile!!! I have lived in k.c., mo, and love that city. There is soo much more to do there, then i topeka. I, once, told a friend who lives in k.c., mo, that if i ever decide to move back to the kansas area, i am going to bypass topeka, and move to k.c., mo. Then, my children and grandchildren can come visit for the day or weekend, then go back home. But, that is just a dream.

I guess i will just have to keep that a big dream, as my daughter and children are planning on moving out here, to bakersfield or fresno, ca. I live right smack dab between the two cities, in a smaller town called lindsay. It is pretty nice here, friendly folks, too.

Well, must close for now. Next transmission-who knows!!!

Peace and love to all who reads this-elaine

Some of his henchpeople came out here (southeastern WA) to attempt a picket of the memorial service for a local Marine sergeant. You'd have loved it. The law forbade them within a certain distance of the premises, so they had to stand on a vacant lot across a street. There were five of them, and they were escorted in and out of town by Franklin County deputies.

Facing them was the most diverse counter-protesting wall of local humanity you could imagine: white, black, Hispanic, old, young, male, female, gay, straight, veterans, hippies, pagans, Christians, and a phalanx of bikers. I could tell that the Pasco Police did not want to hold us back, but I think everyone realized that what those people jones for is media attention of the kind they get when they get assaulted.

And yes, among what must have been two thousand of us blocking the attendees from having to see these sad excuses for humanity, there was one husky heavy-bearded fellow in a prominent KANSAS t-shirt, making sure that those around me saw that Fred Phelps is not Kansas and does not represent it.

When they didn't get their violent media bite even by having the little girl trample the flag, they packed up and left with a diamond of squad cars escorting them to the Franklin County line. For them--mission not accomplished.
