We decided against living in Topeka (eventhough my husband is now working there). We decided on Lawrence and love it so far. Its definately not Wichita, which is what I was very worried about when my husband accepted this job offer.

There were five of them, and they were escorted in and out of town by Franklin County deputies.
Facing them was the most diverse counter-protesting wall of local humanity you could imagine: white, black, Hispanic, old, young, male, female, gay, straight, veterans, hippies, pagans, Christians, and a phalanx of bikers. I could tell that the Pasco Police did not want to hold us back, but I think everyone realized that what those people jones for is media attention of the kind they get when they get assaulted.
And yes, among what must have been two thousand of us blocking the attendees from having to see these sad excuses for humanity, there was one husky heavy-bearded fellow in a prominent KANSAS t-shirt, making sure that those around me saw that Fred Phelps is not Kansas and does not represent it.
When they didn't get their violent media bite even by having the little girl trample the flag, they packed up and left with a diamond of squad cars escorting them to the Franklin County line. For them--mission not accomplished.

LOL Yes, we'd show much more tolerance by not tolerating him now wouldn't we.

Dear j_k_k-good for ya'll up there in wa state!!! I aplaud what ya'll did!! What is wrong with those people, that Marine gave his life for this country, just so people-(if you call those people-people!!)-can be free to do what they want!!! I would of loved to been there, when that happened!!! A great number of people, against 5 derelects!! Would of been a sight to see, in my books!!! I comment ya'll whole heartedly!!!
They don't need any recognition of any kind!!! What they stand for is not the American way, and not at all God's way!!! I am Southern Baptist, but these people aren't even S. B. They are something like a cult, brainwashing people, and little children!!! I feel for them, just can't reach!!! LOL!!!
Thanks again!!! We need more people like these people in WA state!!! God Bless You!!!! Elaine from CA

Please, people, understand that Fred Phelps and his goons do not represent the people of Topeka, or anywhere else in Kansas! They are fringe... and will remain so, until they can be shut down!

It was a sight to see, and a pleasure to be part of. For the most part, people around here tend to live and let live; it takes a lot to stir them up, and there isn't a strong tendency toward wardrum-pounding patriotism and flag-waving--it's a quieter sort. Since I am one of the least patriotic or flag-waving people you'll ever meet, that's partly why I feel at ease here. Well, attempting to politicize and abuse the funeral of a fallen local soldier, that's one of the magic ways to get a lot of Tri-Citians to turn up, flag-wavers or not. Had it not been for the police, there would have been physical action. But locals also understand when the police are doing the right thing, and didn't give them any trouble. I was proud of them on that too.
But one thing that I keep having to explain to people is that these vandals (they are not a church and I won't call them one; they are simply a gang of vandals) did not originate in Kansas, are not part of Kansas and were probably only excelled for Most-Disliked Kansas Residents when they caught the BTK guy. So if I hadn't shown up to represent, I'd have been ashamed of myself. I went for a Marine who deserves respect (regardless of what I think of the administration that brought about his death), for my home state, and for every gay friend I have as well.
