Bourbon County has the second highest vehicle registration fees in the state yet is a run down community of less than 8,000 people. The juco has a lot of its programs in a couple other counties although those counties don't pay the taxes. Although they want to continually raise taxes to improve the community, they refuse to enforce basic maintenance ordinances for the slum lords. So, they'll have nice streets with rundown houses. Are these rundown houses increasing the value of our homes? No, but the tax valuation keeps going up. The town is steadily losing population - what does that tell you?

If they would have passed the additional sales tax to build a 6.5 million dollar aquatic center, this would not have included maintenance and they expected more than 1/2 of the revenue to come from "tourists", what shape would they be in? I would like to at least live somewhere where they watch the news to see what the economy is looking like. While the vote lost, it wasn't by the margin it should have been. What would be the value of a house in a city that went bankrupt? They just blow my mind with the stuff they come up with. Unless you live here, of what value is your appraisal of the city and visiting once, well

....not even worth my time. I do appreciate those who had positive things to say about the other small cities as we have lived many places that were really nice, Junction City, KS, Salina, KS, Manhattan, KS, Ozark, AL, Marana, AZ, Wade, NC. Moving around just gives you a different prospective on things. I have seen excellent, good, average and this town doesn't fall in those categories.

I even lived in Wilson, KS for awhile and the people there were nice, kept their properties maintained and did not have to spend millions of dollars to prove anything.

There are many good towns in Kansas but you have to define what you are looking for and definitely visit first. It can be extremely difficult to move from a larger city to a small town - shopping, activities, quality of education, employment, medical services.
