Yeah, there are some nice places. Rental seem to be at a premium these days. There's just not that much available. The lack of "inventory" hasn't affected rates though. You have to be careful though, There's some good places and then there are some real dumps. I'll try and look up and notice the better apartment complexes as I drive around town and post them up here. Good luck!

I was new from the Detroit area and who knows how i ended up in Sterling, but they are not friendly to new families from out of town. My family wasnt the only one that got the hell out of town. They weren't welcomed either. I have a feeling that a lot of small towns in central Kansas are like that.

Great Bend is nice, but my favorite small town in Kansas is McPherson. Very nice, it holds 2 colleges for a town with the size of 13,000. Thats impressive. Main highway is 56 and a very, VERY nice downtown area. Very intresting library, and it even has a parking garage which is rare for a small town in Kansas. I dont even think Hutchinson has a parking garage, unless i havent heard of it. Nice courthouse, and easy access to Wichita on I-135, which also goes north to I-70 which could basically get you anywhere. I prefer to have a freeway by a town i live in, thats just me though because i grew up in Detroit, which i loved. But small towns can be very brutal, yet peaceful.

I'm sorry that you've experienced unwelcome "neighbors" in rural Kansas. I haven't had that really yet. I mean yeah, you run into the snobbery but so far I feel our family has been welcomed. It's taken some work though, we've had to get involved in activities we were unable, or not willing, to in K.C. Time will tell, but so far, we're doing well. I like it and do NOT miss the interstates cutting through town . . . not at all.
