Requesting Assistance Regarding Wichita
Hi...I am moving from Pennsylvania to Arizona in two weeks and have recently edited my stops from 2 to 3...which means one in Wichita. My question is...is this a good place to stop and what is a good section of the city to stay in? My sister works for Marriott, so I'm trying to keep it to Marriott Brand hotels, but if you have any other suggestions, that's great too!
Thanks!

There is a pretty nice Marriott at Webb & Kellogg. I stayed there when I came here to interview for a position. I mean it's not 5 star or anything but it's a nice enough place to lay your travel weary head. And it's just off of the main road (Hwy 54 aka Kellogg) so you wont have to go far off your path when you are passing through.

Thanks! Also, are there any really excellent/fun/affordable places to eat or visit (if I have time) while I'm in the area? Preferably close to where I'm staying.....

Well a drive from one end of town to the other doesn't take much more than 15 minutes so you can be anywhere in Wichita in a short amount of time....so basically everything is close to where you're staying.
Places to eat: The people who have lived here all their lives may be able to recommend someplace better than I. But the area has all the typical chain restaurants you'd find just about anywhere. If you take a drive north on Rock Rd from Kellogg you'll find plenty of places to eat.
Shopping: There is a mall at Rock & Kellogg and also the Bradley Fair Shopping center on N Rock just south of 21st. It's a pretty nice area. Sadly my wife loves to spend time there.
Other stuff to do: There's a pretty nice zoo, Aviation Museum, Old Town, Warren Theater.
There's not a whole lot of "vacation destination" type stuff here to do....I mean it's Kansas...Disney doesn't have a theme park here and there is no ocean front property.

Thanks for your help...maybe others can also recommend a nice food/bar joint...maybe near WSU?

I actually am quite fond of Kansas, Kansans, and I routinely find myself rooting for KU in basketball and football (despite the fact that I've never stepped foot in the state). So it can't be that bad... hehe

Well old town has some places like that. I didn't know what you had in mind for places to eat. It's been a while since I was down there but here is a list of places to go. Also may explore this site for other things.

There's nothing close to WSU, that I know of. Except for Sonic and you would only want to go there during daylight. Seriously, it isn't your stereotypical college neighborhood...
Haven't been to the zoo, but heard it is nice.
Botanica is pretty nice. I call it an oasis in the desert. www.botanica.org
Haven't found any restaurants to go completely gaga over, yet, sorry. Some of the chains ones aren't too bad. The IHOP on Kellogg near that Marriott is good, at least the help & food has been pretty good when we have been there.
Timberline has some pretty good food. I think it is better than Outback. Timberline Steakhouse and Grill
Jason's Deli on Rock Rd. has a reasonably priced salad bar that we like very much. Jason's Deli
Sorry I don't know more..rather new here myself.

I'd definitely recommend the Old Town area (see the link in the post above). If you stay at the Marriott at Kellogg and Webb, Old Town is 5 or 6 miles west on Kellogg (to Washington), and a half mile north. Better yet, stay at the Hotel at Old Town (the link above has details), and walk to everything. If you have time for a movie, the Warren Old Town is fun ("dinner at your seat").

Il Vicino at 13th and Oliver is a small but very good wood-oven pizza restaurant, as is Piztros, which is in the Waterfront at 13th and Webb. Do check out the Waterfront or the Plazzio at 13th and Greenwich, which has some restaurants, a Warren Theater and The Alley, as well as a Marriott Residence Inn.
Riverside has some cool places, such as the Riverside Perk at 11th and Bitting Ave. It's kind of hard to find, so it would be an adventure finding this coffee shop. You'd also see a different side of Wichita than where you'd be staying in any Marriott.
The Museum of World Treasures is in Old Town.
The Sedgwick County Zoo has been rated one of the best zoos in the world, no lie! After comparing our zoo with the San Diego Zoo, which is literally the best zoo in the world, I'd say ours is pretty dang nice.
All Star Sports/Adventure (broken link) has two locations, one on 21st between Tyler and Ridge, and the other on Webb between 13th and Central
If you have time to catch a movie, make sure to to the Warren Theaters, as others have suggested. Also among the best in the world.
Oh, and if burgers are your thing, check out Ty's Diner on 2nd between Seneca and McLean. It was rated as having the best hamburger in the city.
