I always THOUGHT we were in the midwest; that's what I grew up thinking. Then when I went to Florida (to visit, not to live), I was told that Kansas is considered mid-south. News to me, but maybe it's true.

Born in East Tennessee, pretty much raised in Atlanta...trust me there is nothing 'southern' about Kansas, at least not in Wichita And no Cracker Barrel don't count.Though Furr's does have some mighty respectable soup beans (that would be pintos) , Hog Wild and 2 Brothers isn't horrible BBQ, but not like home and there are some friendlier places to shop. I just call it no where land LOL
its alright tho', whatever you want to call it.
Where can I get a jar of real chowchow?! Yeow, not at Dillons! Nor c.b.

Hey a-Joe- Chow chow is pretty much finely shredded/chopped cabbage, onion, maybe green peppers, red peppers, for hot versions chopped small green peppers...this is simmered and like kind of pickled with vinegar, sugar, and different spices and seasonings....
the variations are endless. Think pickle relish...but no pickles! Or like a chutney.
Any where from mild to hot. Goes excellent with pintos, turnip or collard greens, beans. Hot dogs or other meats.
HMMMM good!
Maybe that southern accent you heard was mine I always get 'you aren't from here are you' ?!

I moved from Kansas to Kentucky and they called me a "Yankee". When I asked what a yankee was the guy said "A yankee is someone who comes in here and tells us what to do."
So maybe Kansas is somewhere more to the North than it appears to be.

The Upper Midwest has far fewer southern influences compared with Kansas and Missouri. Therefore, it just has more of a "Yankee" culture. The latitude of Kansas and most of Missouri is pretty far to the south, comparable to areas of Kentucky and Virginia.
