Default Advice for first time Home buyer...

Just wanted to get some advice or thoughts from any of you about first time home buying. First, im fairly new to the area so i dont know a whole lot (which nieghborhoods are safe, which are not)

Im looking to buy in the Kansas City Area.
Im undecided if i want to be in KCMO or in JoCo.

One question, I work in JoCo, if i lived in KCMO would i have to pay way more in tax.??? and do alot of people do this?

Any suggestions as to what neighborhoods you would recommend to a first time home buyer?

Also would you recommend a smaller single family home or a townhome/condo. Im leaning towards a townhome.
Thanks in advance for any help/thoughts its much appreciated.
