Default I-70 Motels in western Kansas

Hi! We will be traveling from KC to Denver, and are planning on leaving Thursday evening after work and driving as far as we can get. We think we will probably stop for the night somewhere between Hays and Colby, and are looking for an inexpensive yet clean/safe motel to stay at. It seems like I remember there being random hotels off of the interstate in western kansas that aren't really in any towns, but maybe I have just made this up in my head

Anyways, normally we would just start driving and stop wherever we end up at, but now we have an infant and would feel better about having somewhat of a plan. I have also been checking hotels.com, but jsut wondered if anyone knows of a place we could stop... the closer to Colby the better.

Thanks!

There are several hotels less than a mile off interstate, at the Colby exit. They look to be very reasonably priced. There is also a hotel at the second Oakley exit, that is directly across from Mittens Truck Stop (yummy greasy spoon food, last time I was there). You can't miss it from I-70. Oakley is about 5 hours from Denver. Colby is about 20 minutes closer.

Okay, thanks! I was thinking we would probably stop somewhere around Colby, so this helps a lot.

If you make it as far as Colby, I HIGHLY recommend the Colby Comfort Inn. I traveled extensively for work and everytime I went to NW KS I stayed there. Very resonable pricing, clean rooms, a nice bar and grill attached, and free hot breakfast in the morning (think waffles, eggs, biscuits and gravy, etc.) I stayed there enough that for 3 years in a row the staff sent me a Christmas card

If you don't make it to Colby, I recommend the Comfort Suites in Hays just off 70.

Have a great trip!

I would stop in Oakley, it is about half way between Denver and Kansas City. There is a nice motel on the north end of town. The 1st Travel Inn, Oakley is rated 2 Stars but they are working to get the third one and they are a Magnuson Hotel. We had a nice super clean and quite room for an affordable rate in summer 08. Their outdoor pool was crisp clear, the owner shared some advice about the area, in fact they took their time with every guest they had. In the morning they had home made muffins, coffee and seasonal fruits. Next time we pass through the area we will definitely stay there again.

Not a lot of good places to stay between Hays and Colby. If you are getting weary by about Russell, stop in Hays - plenty of options. If you can keep going, plan to keep going on to Colby.

Salina may be a little too soon to stop overnight, but the the Super 8 along I-70 is a good place to stay. The hotel staff were couteous and hotel room and grounds were clean. Reasonably priced also. It is near restaurants and gas stations and is handy. The hotel has an indoor pool and hot tub, which are nice.

From driving I-70, Colby and Hays have a good selection of hotels and some smaller towns such as Oakley, Goodland, WaKeeny, and Russell should have decent places to stay.
