Question Emporia bound

So I am moving to Emporia for a couple of years to work on a Masters degree. How is th night life there? Are there plenty of things to do? College bar's?

I currently live in a one horse town and there's no way Emporia is smaller then where im at now.

J

I think Emporia's pretty quiet in a pleasant way. My aunt works in student wellness at ESU, and it seems like everyone in the family but me has attended school there at some point. I never really checked out the bar scene or night life but the food there is pretty good (good Kansas stuff). I know that when I'm back home and want to go out for microbrews we always seem able to find good ones (and my cousins and aunt and uncle are very good judges of such things). Plus, if you want more intense college-style excitement you aren't far from Wichita, Lawrence or KCK.

I believe Emporia has TWO horses, so you should have a blast!

Kansas city would be your best bet. Not much in Emporia. As a truck driver, I can tell you the T/A there doesn't even sell beer.

Thanks j_k_k. Yes I too am a micro brew fan. Are there any particular places that you would recommend for drinks?

What about getting another job, I have had much success as a bartender while I was attending college and would like to continue this kind of work at a good bar or restaurant.

I can't recommend any specific places because I don't get back home often enough. Too bad my cousin's plans to start a microbrewery fell through, or I'd send you there. My knowledge of Emporia is more from periodic visits over the years than living in residence. But I do think it's fair to say that Emporia is pretty quiet as college towns go. ESU used to be the Teachers' College, and that might be a cultural factor. What you will like about Emporia is that it's a very civil place, with friendly people. But it won't have anything to rival the Free State Brewpub up in Lawrence.

I'm suspecting that you wouldn't have too much trouble finding work bartending given that you've got experience. That's a profession with some turnover, as you know, which creates opportunity. Last time I was there I noticed significant recent eatery construction out by the turnpike onramp area, which was monumentally fornicated up due to construction.
