Default Dark Paint in Kansas

Hi, my wife and I are moving into a house in Kansas. It has extremely dark paint and carpet, as does every house we have looked at in the area. We are both fans of bright, cheerful houses, so we were going to redecorate, but since we have yet to see a bright color scheme, we were wondering if we were missing something (does it attract tornadoes or something)? So if anyone has any ideas as to why everyone paints dark in Kansas, please let me know (constructive answers only, please).

The dark paint/carpet would have nothing to do with tornadoes..

I honestly have never lived in a house that had really dark paint. The houses I lived in were bright....

What area are you talking about?

Where, in Kansas, are you moving? I've lived in NW, NE, central and SE Ks and never encountered a darkly painted/carpeted house, or apartment. Usually, it's the opposite, as people seem to be afraid of color.

I have no idea what you mean. Unless you possibly looked at a number of older homes where nothing was ever repainted or updated over the years.

I think it's the current decorating trend. Same in Oklahoma. I don't like it either!
