Manhattan
I have been doing some searching and am thinking of looking into relocating to the area of Manhattan, KS. I am an xray/CT tech and would like to know anything about the area. Car registration, rental costs. Anything anyone would like to give for info would be much appreciated. I am going to be by myself with my cat. Any more info needed about me just ask.

Manhattan is home to Kansas State University. It is a big College town, and the town is between 40-50K. It is located in the scenic Flint Hills region, and has many restaurants and shops in the Downtown area. Rentals are affordable, you could probably get something decent in the $600-800 range. College towns have more rentals. If you are coming from a more urban area of NH I would also suggest the Lawrence/JOCO corridor in far eastern Kansas. It might have more selection with regard to xray/CT tech jobs. It is also the growth corridor in Kansas with many more transplants from all over the country. The COL in both areas is probably lower than the national average with economic growth about par for the US.

I would suggest the Johnson County or Lawrence area, less full of college students who are already broke simply from college tuition, books, and living expenses :P Lawrence seems to be full of more people who just like living there. Manhattan, as I have been told by many, is rather boring at most times.

Having lived in Manhattan for about 10 years, I would say that it is a relatively safe place to live, with cost of living being relatively low. You wouldn't want to give up your car, as to my knowledge there isn't a very good public transportation systerm.
I will say that if you are looking for a more eclectic place to live, Lawrence, Ks. would be better. It is also a college town, home to KU but it seems to have more options as far as things to do and a more diverse night life.
We lived in Founders Hill apts. back 4 years ago and paid 650 for a 1 bedroom. It was a nice apt. complex. I would say that 600-800 would be your avg. rental cost for a decent 1 bedroom apt. C
Close to Manhattan are Fort Riley Army Base and about a 45 minute drive you have Topeka.
I liked living there okay and I always felt safe.

Might Want To Think Again
We were seriously considering returning to Junction City, Ks which is near Manhattan until we read this in our local newspaper: The government has recommended a site in Kansas for a new $450 million laboratory to study biological threats such as anthrax and foot-and-mouth disease, officials said Wednesday.- right now this is located on an island and there have been times when there have been "accidents". It looks like they will be looking at other biological warfare threats and since the government is involved, you just never know what they are really doing anymore. Right now with the return of the Big Red One to Fort Riley, property is grossly overpriced and buying high may leave you up the creek without a paddle if they reduce troops like they have in the past when they were considering closing Fort Riley especially with the new president elect coming to power next month. Think twice at a minimum.

I don't think you are aware of the many things that happen in neighborhoods across the country. A lot of similar "pharmaceutical testing" is privatized and done in strip malls across the US. There is a nuclear reactor on KSU's campus for that matter. I couldn't live anywhere if I took into account all the dangerous stuff that happens nearby and next door.

I am amused and impressed with how information travels. My husband has been employed on Plum Island for nearly 15 years and we live on Long Island, NY. You were apprised of the move before we were as we were just informed, still, you can rest assured there have been no "accidents". (Do you think the people of NY would put up with "accidents"? Or do you honestly think I would jeopardize the health and safety of my family for a paycheck we can obtain anywhere else?) We plan to make the move to Kansas because yes, it is that safe and we do have confidence in the ability of the scientist and researchers who run the labs.

I knew there would be folks that would think this is a bad thing for Manhattan. I'd just say you need to do a little more research before you make any more assumptions.
