When considering Topeka the crime rate should be the least of your worries. Not sure what your current situation is but Topeka, IMO, is total dump. The only reason I go there is to go racing at Heartland Park.

Well...*ahem*....I wouldn't necessarily say that Topeka is a TOTAL dump, mind you.

Not totally.....LOL!

But there are rather large areas/parts of Topeka that....are.....well....kinda not-all-that-great.....asthetically and/or othwerwise.

I might take a job in Topeka. How are the schools? I thought about putting our daughter in the Catholic school. I heard they are really good?

Also I looked at apts near Westridge Mall. They seemed nice and safe compared to ones in Wichita.
We looked at houses on the SW. Everything seemed okay to me. I liked Gage Park and Zoo.

I thought I would only live in Topeka until my house sold and my DH gets a job.. then we thought about Lawrence.. but it is very expensive for the size of house. Plus the commute.

So I am to take it that people here on the board from Topeka has NOTHING good to say about Topeka?

i have lived here my whole life. for the most part i think it is ok. Violent crime (murders etc) are for the most part between people that are shady to begin with. i can be anywhere in town in less than 30 min. I have always been able to find a job (my family too). We are close to the big city if you want to do something not available here. close to KU and KSU and we have WU and WU law school. My kids went to topeka high and it was great. Topeka is not flashy by any means but i have always felt safe and secure when at home, at work, or shopping...even when walking my dog. Housing and living is pretty affordable and we have access to really good medical care between our 2 hospitals here, lawrence and all the hospitals in KC.....
