Do you plan on being employed in KS or just living there until your boyfriend moves later in the year. If you take up employment, I would think you would be at a higher risk for not titleing your car, etc. If was me, I would wait out my kentucky tags and go from there. If you are still there when they expire, look into getting KS tags.

Maybe this was already addressed in this forum but there were a ton of threads to read.

Do I need to change my tags and driver's license? I will be living there less than a year. My tags are not up for renewal until May 2009.

What is the best way to handle this?
The law usually states 30 days but if you are staying there less than a year, I would not bother. Just a lot of money for less than a year. I would not bother with it. If you get stopped just tell the cop you are there with relatives or something.

I wouldn't worry about anything as long as you don't give up your KY residency.

When I moved to Georgia I did not switch my Illinois tags for 2 years nor my driver's license until the Illinois one was about to expire.

Default Smaller Town is Different

I think if she were moving to someplace like Chicago or Atlanta, it would never be an issue...I know people who lived in Chicago for years with Florida, Michigan, and Kentucky Plates and they have never had an issue, they always just say they are visiting (and they keep them registered to actual parents/relatives houses in their respective states).

But this is Chicago and we have 3 million people and a lot of out-of-state plates. Wichita is a whole 'nother story. When I lived in Lenexa (Johnson County) and visited Wichita, people commented that I was from Overland Park because of the "JO" sticker on my company vehicle's plates.

I found that Kansas was not a big fan of out-of-state plates...my boyfriend with Missouri plates hated staying at my place, but that's because of the whole KS/MO border issue.

My recommendation? Ride it out. Just say your visiting. I don't think you will have an issue. As long as there is still someone living at your legal residence in Kentucky, you will be fine.

Good Luck!
